College Majors & The Rise of AI

Proponents of AI are over-promising.

As an example, NYT said the advertising industry is actually getting hammered right now by AI...and the creatives are the most impacted.

Top Creatives made nominally more in the 1980s then they do today because of AI and digital advertising (and AI's role in data analysis). Everyone in the industry was pissed by Coca Cola's AI commercials...but guess what, the average consumer could care less.

AI is also chipping away at film making...people arent' filming AI scripts, but now AI is used to create storyboards, create digital effects, etc.

The trades are relatively immune...but not completely immune. Supposedly, new HVAC systems, boilers, etc. will incorporate AI technology to make it easier to do DIY stuff and to alert to any major fixes before those fixes are needed. Will eliminate the need for annual maintenance. All these add up to fewer visits from trades people and far fewer emergency fixes (that are usually at a premium).

So...who knows.

Meh. Cars have gotten more 'advanced' and have actually become harder to fix if you want to DIY IMO.

Saw on X today:

* ANTHROPIC CEO: AI COULD WIPE OUT HALF OF ALL ENTRY-LEVEL WHITE COLLAR JOBS AND SPIKE UNEMPLOYMENT TO 10-20% WITHIN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS... GOVERNMENTS AND COMPANIES NEED TO STOP SUGAR-COATING WHAT THEY KNOW IS COMING

Electric cars don't require any routine maintenance. As long as you don't get into an accident, you will never have to get your car serviced (ok...maybe a flat tire).

I guess the current administration is extending the life span for gas cars...but the rest of the world is transitioning quickly to electric and even GM is about to release a new battery that is far cheaper and gets better range than existing batteries.

Performing arts is where it's at right now. AI isn't replacing Broadway, dance company work, or anything live anytime soon.

The shortening of attention spans might hurt live performances though.

I dont know. Some of those AI clips on social media are pretty entertaining. I would imagine someone trying "super impose" for a live audience.

They're scary good now. I just saw someone jump into a volcano; the video looked 100% real, no indicators of it being AI (and I'm able to tell if something is AI way more than people around me, usually!) Real actors can't jump into volcanos.

How is this a credible avenue for the masses? Barely anyone today can make it as a working actor, and of course 0.1% really make it.

Do you believe there will be an explosion of live entertainment, thereby significantly increasing the demand for stage crew and other ancillary services?

Let's hope AI malware creators have some surprises in the future. Maybe some sort of AI digital fungal rot.

Also, agribusiness - really niche, but given climate change its growing and can't be replaced by AI - though AI can be involved to improve some efficiencies.

AI will be able to do that better vs any person. Seriously.

They can do it once.

Do you mean farming? There are in fact robotic tomato and other fruit pickers being tested as we speak. If they can pick those crops without damaging them, then they can pick many other crops with harder exteriors.

There are definitely robotic seeders and AI is being used for weed treatment and self-driving tractors.

You either have immigrant labor or machines.

This guy is a toolbag. His company will be bankrupt within 2 years. Anthropic and OpenAI are hemorrhaging billions of dollars a year. This is him just pumping up some unattainable future capability to keep investment money rolling in.
