From NoVA, drive to Whitetail is 15-20 min. longer. Whether one prefers Whitetail to Liberty is probably personal reference. I prefer Whitetail for longer runs so i can work on carving - I also like the express quad from the base to the top. I like Liberty for some of the side hits on the back side and the park setup, although Whitetail has raised its game this season with setting up the park along side Snowpark. (Speaking for me and 2 boys). |
My older daughter is learning blues. DH is not the issue - he grew up in NE and is very comfortable on a mountain. But he mostly sticks with our older daughter. But just because he can do it does not mean he can teach it. |
The beginners area at WT has 2 lifts and is separated from the rest of the place. The middle lift (non-express) serves 2 greens and the park. 1 of the greens, Snowpark, is a good for progressing onto steeper blues. I do think the blues at WT are steeper than Liberty - WT just has more vertical than Liberty. Also, the blues are a bit more spread out at WT. At Liberty, when it gets crowded the back side (where the blues are) become a shit show. |
one more follow-up. At Roundtop, the black, blues, and greens are more separated so my impression is that you don't get folks riding on top of each other in terms of varying abilities. Black are on the far left, blues in the middle, and greens are on the far right whereas at Liberty, the blues/blacks are a bit intertwined. WT is in the middle although most of the blues are separate from the blacks. |
Liberty is north facing so generally has better conditions later in the season (which concludes in like February there…) |
We used to go to ski liberty, but after we went to whitetail we didn’t go back. My kids take ski/snowboard lessons nearly every week during snow season, it used to be DH ( snowboard) took kids to practice after lessons, until he had a bad fall on stairs caused spin injury. I’m a bad skier so wouldn’t be able to take kids. We thought about let kids ride lift themselves, but we couldn’t see the end even for the easiest trail lift, I didn’t feel safe for them to go on their own; and the magic carpets either very crowded, not working, or closed early, at ski liberty. At whitetail, at the learning area, kids can either use the magic carpets or lift ( we could see the end of it and feel comfortable); there’s another lift closest to the ski school office, kids can also ride lift themselves ( we can also see the end of the lift). You should visit whitetail to try and decide. |
+1. The layout at WT is just so much better. Beginners on left side, advance beginners/intermediates in middle, advance on back side. Separation helps with crowd control and just general safety. Liberty set up is terrible. One way down front side so you have all the beginners plus intermediates and advance wanting to get down to the lodge. It’s so crowded and total sh’tshow with beginners falling and rest of levels speeding down. Same with the back side where all the black runs converge onto the blues runs. |
There is no way she can handle the blues at WT if she is just learning the blues at Liberty. They are 3-4 times longer runs and much, much steeper. She needs to conquer the ones at Liberty before even attempting the ones at WT |
Which one is better for tubing? |
meh. go for it at WT! |
OP here. How does SnowPark compare to Dipsy Doodle? Is it harder or similar? |
Dipsy Doodle is a much longer run - but except for that first and short steep drop on the backside when you start the run, it's very mellow the rest of the way. Snow Park is much steeper and for a longer portion of the run. If just comparing local resorts in the mid-atlantic, one could call it a baby blue. |
Thanks. |
Snowpark is steeper and probably comparable so some of the less steep blues at Liberty. |
