It is worth the slightly longer drive (from the DC area) to go to Whitetail, instead of Liberty. At least last weekend, Liberty had 4 of 7 runs open, whereas Whitetail had 7 of 7 runs open. Whitetail is bigger. Liberty has more beginners, although both places have a lot of beginners. Our neighbor is an expert skier. When he skies locally, he always prefers Whitetail over Liberty.
From NoVA, drive to Whitetail is 15-20 min. longer. Whether one prefers Whitetail to Liberty is probably personal reference. I prefer Whitetail for longer runs so i can work on carving - I also like the express quad from the base to the top. I like Liberty for some of the side hits on the back side and the park setup, although Whitetail has raised its game this season with setting up the park along side Snowpark. (Speaking for me and 2 boys).
The beginners area at WT has 2 lifts and is separated from the rest of the place. The middle lift (non-express) serves 2 greens and the park. 1 of the greens, Snowpark, is a good for progressing onto steeper blues. I do think the blues at WT are steeper than Liberty - WT just has more vertical than Liberty. Also, the blues are a bit more spread out at WT. At Liberty, when it gets crowded the back side (where the blues are) become a shit show.
+1. The layout at WT is just so much better. Beginners on left side, advance beginners/intermediates in middle, advance on back side. Separation helps with crowd control and just general safety. Liberty set up is terrible. One way down front side so you have all the beginners plus intermediates and advance wanting to get down to the lodge. It’s so crowded and total sh’tshow with beginners falling and rest of levels speeding down. Same with the back side where all the black runs converge onto the blues runs.
