We usually go to Liberty. Any reason to go to Whitetail instead? Thx. |
Better greens and blues at Whitetail. Blacks more challenging at Liberty.
The blues at Whitetail are much better. Much longer runs and steeper. |
OP here. This is how it looked to me. More greens and blues, which is what we ski. Are some of the blues easy or are they all very steep? |
We go to all 3 (RT, Lib, WT) bc skiing Lib all the time gets boring.
We also base it on weather and snow conditions abd what traiks are opened. Lib likes to aim their snow guns at the lift line at the base, but WT's main lift breaks down a lot, but RT is an extra 35 min past Lib so makes for a bit longer drive. |
I prefer Whitetail because the runs are longer, the expert side is usually pretty uncrowded, and it's a closer drive for me. I went to Liberty last year and it was so unpleasant (ungroomed runs which were fine for me, but resulted in a minefield of fallen skiers that was challenging to navigate) that I left after a couple of hours. I also found people on the lift to be super unfriendly, while at Whitetail people tend to be more chatty. That's a pro or con depending on your preferences. |
IMO they are all on the steeper side of blues and longer than liberty. Because they are all on the same section of the hill they are all pretty similar. I would say angels drop to homerun is probably the least steep of the blues. What runs do you ski at Liberty? |
I only do greens at Liberty with my younger daughter. And I'm a chicken - I even hate that one big turn on Dipsy Doodle. DH will ski all the blues and single blacks. Our older daughter is getting more comfortable with blues and will sometimes connect upper Dipsy Doodle to Whitney's Way and Lower Heavenly. I think they are fine at either place. I guess I am wondering if Whitetail has more greens. Liberty is really boring on greens. |
WT does not have more greens. Unless you count the beginner area. WT has sidewinder which is a gentle long green. The other green, snow park is a good bit steeper. If the kids enter into the blue area at Liberty via dipsy and not the upper part then they will not be ready for the blues at WT. WT blues are a lot steeper and longer than any blues at liberty. Snow park at WT is a good in between to go from greens to blues at WT. have you all done lessons? I find lessons helped me progress an gain confidence. |
Thanks. Sounds like we should stick with Liberty. We also like Massanutten. I actually don’t like to ski at all but someone has to ski with my younger daughter so that DH and older daughter can do harder stuff so I’m stuck. We have and do take lessons, usually privates, but we only ski 1-2 days a year so you don’t make much progress. |
They are all totally terrible and I would base 100 percent on conditions at each mountain, which can vary. Whichever has the least crappy conditions, go there. |
Depends on your level, what you want to do (jibbing/jumps park, side hits, groomers) and what you're trying to improve. |
It doesn’t sound like anyone in your family, even your DH and other child, are ready for the blues at WT |
Another difference between the two are the hours of operations. |
If you're looking for variety, one can certainly consider Whitetail and Roundtop for resorts near DC. Whether it's worth the extra trek/drive to Seven Springs, Wisp, then yeah, i think that's questionable given the amount of skiing your family does. |
It is worth the slightly longer drive (from the DC area) to go to Whitetail, instead of Liberty. At least last weekend, Liberty had 4 of 7 runs open, whereas Whitetail had 7 of 7 runs open. Whitetail is bigger. Liberty has more beginners, although both places have a lot of beginners. Our neighbor is an expert skier. When he skies locally, he always prefers Whitetail over Liberty. |
