The same reason they denied covid, called it "just a cold", etc. Denial is a powerful coping mechanism, and control tool (depending on where you get your "news") |
My giant had eggs today. Fewer than usual, and twice as expensive, but they were available. |
Last week my TJ had zero eggs on the shelf but TJs has really weird supply lines so they are often the first to suffer if there is any supply disruption. Like a snowstorm in Chicago can affect their stocking of certain things.
I’ve always thought eggs were ridiculously under priced for protein gram per dollar spent, compared to most other animal proteins. We only eat a dozen or two a week so the prices could double and it would only add a few hundred bucks to our annual food budget so I’m not gojng to worry too much about this one. I am worried a little more about meat prices and berries after Trump deports most of the people that are picking and processing them. |
Safeway and Giant are pretty lackluster grocery stores. Wegmans sure, WF if I'm rich... |
With some TJs you really have to be strategic as to when you go because they can get picked over and if the truck hasn't come in they will sell out of stuff. IME at ours Sun evening-Tues are always iffy. It's always been this way. Still have yet to see them out of eggs though. |
+1. The obsession with egg prices this election cycle was.....intereesting. |
There is a quantity limit on purchasing eggs at our local BJs. The eggs aren’t on some crazy sale. The supply chain is experiencing some bounces. US poultry has been fighting avian flu for a number of years now and millions upon millions of chickens have been culled. We have a resilient market but there are bound to be impacts. |
Agree on their price being low for their nutritional content. Same for tofu tbh. I’ve always bought eggs when we can’t afford meat. Even the organic ones occasionally as a splurge (and they a much fresher/brighter). Eggs greens n beans for the leaner money months. |
A friend in Chicago reports eggs for $10-12. Not sure if that is for a dozen or 18. |
Safeway was out of eggs. I bought some at WF and, later, Lidl. |
Like the white store brand ones or nicer ones. That’s the lowest price or a price? I can find eggs $4-$15 depending on kind: or if they are duck eggs. |
I think the shortages are localized, which makes sense, because the egg producers and chicken farms serve a particular geographic region, and if those flocks have to be killed because of bird flu, the areas they supply are out of luck. Last time there was a bird flu-related shortage, I didn't notice because I get farmer's market eggs, and chickens that aren't factory farmed are less likely to get/spread bird flu. So my eggs cost about $7/dozen, which is a lot if you're used to paying $2/dozen, but not if you're used to paying $7/dozen. This week I'm probably SOL, though, because I suspect the cold weather will have reduced production. |
This whole post is entirely unnecessary. |
This is trumps fault |
Go to Wegmans. Plenty of everything is available. |
