NCAP Prep swimmers to skip Metros for Altitude Camp

So if you look at all of the club kids (most NCAP, but some other clubs too) who go to 2 of U.S. Open, NCI, AAC LC, OTC, and IMX will not be able to swim Metros, Regions, States by rule.

Are there any carve outs for illness or injury? Seems awfully strict if not

coach can excuse if there are factors like illness or injury. SAT/ACT as well. But those are very different (and valid) excuses rather than missing for multiple club meets.

I don't believe this is a MCPS rule, might be but a coach can override/excuse?

I know for a fact swimmers weren't held to it in 2023.

It is true the only way into states for individual events is from Regionals, but relays can be shaken up.

The 2023 metro and state championship teams had swimmers who missed at least two MCPS dual meets for club events. Maybe scrimmage week (week 0) doesn't count? I don't really know all the ins and outs, but it definitely happens. Top teams in 2024 were also in this position.

Would it be fair to put that restriction on only the public schools at Metros?

It seems like a reasonable rule. In high school football you can’t have other plans for 2 of your 9 regular season games and say “hey Coach, can’t make it this week”.

Attend the meets unless you have extenuating circumstances. If you aren’t about being on a team don’t swim for your school. Club swimming sometimes fails to teach this team aspect.

So it's not true. Great!

OP, your kid doesn’t swim at GP anymore (your posts are obvious so we know you’re the poster whose kid is no longer there but you’re bitter about their experience) so this doesn’t impact you. Even if it were true (and I don’t know that it is because the 15 and overs were at OTC this past week) why exactly do you care? Again, find something better to occupy your time, it’s really unhealthy.

If it's not true, someone definitely has too much time on their hands.

Last year, it was 9th graders (not the 15+ group) who missed regionals for OTC. It is possible with a calendar shift, that offering this year could conflict with metros, putting those kids in the position to choose. In some ways, that's a better choice because not swimming regionals means no individual events at states, therefore missing two HS post season meets. But most kids who have grown up in the sport in the area have heard enough about metros to want to be there.

My kids were never at NCAP. One didn't get a freshman season at all due to Covid. That kid is currently swimming in college. From this perspective, I can say it doesn't matter at all to their physical trajectory whether they attend the camp or race at metros. It is a tough position for a 9th grader to be put in to make that choice, and who knows what pressure comes from coaches, parents, teammates to choose one way or the other.

Dumb question- what is metros?

There is a PVS meet this weekend that conflicts with HS swim so it’s not just OTC trips. The horror! And yes, the school keeps track of the 2 meet rule so after missing two HS meets for NCI, my swimmer will go to the HS meet after the PVS meet. It would be awesome if next year PVS wouldn’t have the older kids swim in the evening so we could avoid and the conflict.

And no one is “made” to go on these trips.

That doesn’t work either, there are MCPS meets all day. A lot of kids will just swim Sunday if they have a HS conflict.

But also, two HS meets during NCI??

HS championship meet involving MCPS teams and many DMV private schools. Very fast meet!

And arguably the most exciting meet to watch as spectators and to cheer as teammates including club meets.

It's a pretty big deal for the schools and kids that participate - a season highlight and just a ton of great energy/vibe at the meet.

This year is the 60th annual(?).

Here is the Psych sheet from last year which gives you and idea of the schools competing and the times:
