Not all AAU get on Varsity. Some will be on JV. |
| Its a million times easier to make any of the girls teams compared to the boys for basketball--at our very large public in FCPS. Its no-cut, which is absurd compared to the boys side, which cuts AAU players from JV. |
| Generally speaking, starters in the WCAC plays AAU at the highest level and will play Division 1. |
| Growing up I didn’t have an opportunity to play on girls’ teams, but I loved sports and played with my brothers. I played on boys teams when my parents could convince a coach to take me. I lived through and was part of the Title IX generation of women and it’s been awesome to see how women’s sports have flourished. I’m surprised that more girls aren’t playing basketball competitively since it’s a sport that doesn’t require a lot of equipment and doesn’t have the same kind of financial hurdle of other sports (at least not at the beginner level). I have boys who are all grown/in college and basketball was always incredibly competitive for freshman/JV and varsity teams so I’m genuinely curious why it’s so different on the girls side. |
| My HS son says girls who are tall and good athletes prefer Volleyball. Its seen as more "cute" and is no contact, so they can still feel girly while they play, put bows in their hair, and wear super short shorts. Take that FWIW, but at our large FCPS girls basketball is no-cut but 100+ boys try out for basketball and as pp mentioned, they do cut AAU players even from JV. |
Interesting! I’m completely out of the loop re volleyball but given the insane number of VB threads on DCUM it definitely seems like it’s a super popular sport. Sorry more girls aren’t playing basketball though. |
This appears to be the case at our large public. The girls either start in volleyball or switch from bball to volleyball by middle school. The girls bball team is more of the tomboy/don’t care about being cute types. And yes very hard to make the boys team. |
My daughter plays on her public HS basketball but the team is not that competitive. She also plays AAU, and my sense is that the AAU circuit is where the serious play is. It’s not cheap and the tournaments are all over the East Coast. It seems like middle school is where there’s a lot of drop off, because the girls that are more serious go on to play AAU, and the rec leagues kind of taper off, so it’s harder to start. |
| Very competitive - FCPS |

Generally true in all the large middle class and UMC fcps HS. |
| Sorry, I find it hard to believe that kids who played AAU aren't making JV. JV teams around here aren't that good. |
It depends on which school and which AAU team. There are some huge high schools where so many kids are going out for basketball that a lot of them will have to be cut. And there are some shockingly bad AAU teams that will take anyone with a pulse as long as their parents pay for them. |
| How tough is it to make BCC's girls basketball teams (JV / Varsity)? |
