Growing up I didn’t have an opportunity to play on girls’ teams, but I loved sports and played with my brothers. I played on boys teams when my parents could convince a coach to take me. I lived through and was part of the Title IX generation of women and it’s been awesome to see how women’s sports have flourished. I’m surprised that more girls aren’t playing basketball competitively since it’s a sport that doesn’t require a lot of equipment and doesn’t have the same kind of financial hurdle of other sports (at least not at the beginner level). I have boys who are all grown/in college and basketball was always incredibly competitive for freshman/JV and varsity teams so I’m genuinely curious why it’s so different on the girls side.
My daughter plays on her public HS basketball but the team is not that competitive. She also plays AAU, and my sense is that the AAU circuit is where the serious play is. It’s not cheap and the tournaments are all over the East Coast. It seems like middle school is where there’s a lot of drop off, because the girls that are more serious go on to play AAU, and the rec leagues kind of taper off, so it’s harder to start.
