Just because it won't be a federal holiday doesn't mean federal workers won't have the day off. We'll need to see if there is an executive order. For example, see the announcement for Bush's day of mourning: https://www.opm.gov/news/releases/2018/12/new...f-mourning-on-dec-5/ |
I’m 52 and it’s now happened five times in my adult life (Nixon, Reagan, Ford, Bush, Carter) |
Biden is handing out reprieves like candy. My money is on the Executive order. |
Ford in 2006 and George HW Bush in 2018. So averaging once every 8-10 years. Inauguration is on MLK Day this year, so not an extra day. It evens out. |
Biden is very old school and deeply reveres Carter. It would be the first time Feds were not off. Which would be kind of an insult. Even atrump gave Feds the day off for Bush. Plus, some Feds do actually work in DC. They like to clear DC out for these events for security and crowd control reasons. |
Right but you don’t work |
That's the deal we make. I was a contractor before I signed on permanent fed. One of the benefits as a permanent employee is that I get paid federal holidays; one of the negatives is that I make less money overall. You pick your dinner and then you eat it. If you don't want to have federal holidays go unpaid and can't budget for it, then sign on permanent and take the pay cut, give up flexibility, etc. |
Normally do not close. |
DP. I'm a federal physician who just covered all pediatric call for my hospital from last Tuesday to this morning. Well, someone took the pager so I could sleep for 8 hours midway, but otherwise, it was me, because we are short-staffed. All the deliveries, all the inpatient, all the admissions, all the transfers. You can pound that sand in from both sides. |
Same age and we’ll like get at least 3 more before we retire (although I’m not a fed so I don’t get them). Clinton, Biden and Trump all will pass in the next decade, almost certainly. I’d give Obama and Bush jr more time but who knows. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if there are two more presidential passings in the next few years, including a seated president. |
Np. This is true in limited instances. I'm a fed and I can't believe how often this lie is repeated by feds. |
I was a gov tech contractor for over a decade and I am now making more as a fed employee GS 15 step 6 in the DMV. The highest I made as a IT PM contractor was $180,000. |
Yet he ordered the Day of Mourning and Flags to be at half mast but did not close the federal government yet... |
I assume they will give off. But the DC issue is separate. They can give off for employees who have a non remote work location the DC area but not anyone else. |
I remember Reagan’s funeral was a holiday. |
