Did your big toddler end up a big kid/adult?

DH and I are shorter than you, though I’m 5’6” so still on tall side. One DS was always 99 or 98% (was so long ago!) who is now 6’2”. Other DS was around 85ish% and was 6’, though I think he’s grown taller this year @18/19. They tower over DH.

We know a kid who was like this. He looked many years older than his age through his whole childhood (and dwarfed his average sized older brother- who is 2yrs older- starting from toddlerhood). The parents are 6’1” and 5’3” ish. When he was 4 he looked like he was 8-10yrs old. I think when he was 10yrs old he must’ve been 5’7” 150lbs or so. Maybe even larger.

He is now 15 and is 6’1”ish 190ish and apparently done growing (has been same size for 2+yrs now). A big kid for sure, but same height as his dad, not crazy gigantic or anything. He is probably 3in taller than his older brother.

He just grew super super early for some reason. The parents always seemed a little baffled by it, so I don’t get the sense it was a common family growth pattern. Pretty average family otherwise.

DS has always been in the 99th percentile for height. He is 6'3'' now at 17, so still in the 99th percentile. I am 5'9" and DH is 6'1".

We have one outlier kid - DH is 5’10” and I am 5’8”. We have a 5 year old who is 52 pounds and 51” tall. Has always been 99th percentile since he was born. Wondering if he will stay like this or go back down to the norm given that DH and I are pretty average sized.

Your husband is on the short side but you are definitely above average height for a woman. Anecdotally i feel like a tall father has the biggest impact on having tall kids.

I think it’s both, but I would give more weight to tall mom. We have friends with a 6’7 kid and a 6’3 kid. Mom and dad are both 6 feet.

Or maybe it is the dad? I was thinking about my mom’s family and her father was 6’1 and her mother was 5’3, and all of her brothers (there are five) are over 6 feet - the tallest is 6’3. My mom is 5’5.

Anecdotally it seems like tall mom always equals for tall kids. Somehow I seem to know a lot of couples where mom is tall but the couple is near the same height (like a 5’9” mom and a 5’10” dad or similar) and their kids always seem to end up so tall. Even when the dad really isn’t. But tall dad + average mom seems to hit or miss.

My kids are still young (11, 9 and almost 6). They were all very tall (and my middle also very heavy) until about 4. Then they all lost in %. DH is 6’2” with a very tall family. I am 5’3” with average to low family height.

My eldest (girl) is currently 65% and very lengthy like DH and his family. Because she has not had a growth spurt and not close to getting her period (behind her peers), pediatrician thinks she might end up 5’7” or so.

my middle (girl) is 45% and looks just like me. She is about 1 inch taller than I was at her age so I guess she will end up 5’4”.

Youngest is a boy. He is not even 6 so might be losing % still. He is about 85% in height (much less in weight) and very lengthy just like his dad. My guess is he will end up shorter than his dad, but probably above 5’ 11”.

My parents are 5’9” and 5’4”. I am 5’3” and my brother 5’10”.

My husband’s parents were 6’3” and 5’7”. Kids were 5’9” (girl), 6’2” (DH), 6’ (girl), 6’ (boy).

The other thing I wanted to add is that it all depends on when puberty hits. I remember the tallest girl in elementary school had her period at 10 and is now shorter than me (maybe 5’2”).

My husband was tall as a young child and lost % until about highschool. He grew late and ended up one of the tallest in his grade.

I, on the other hand, kept my growth curve throughout. I was the 4th shortest girl (out of 12) in my elementary school class and I am one of the shortest moms at pick up…

OP - I have seen this as well regarding when puberty hits. I am of a race where puberty is later than Caucasians. I didn't go through puberty until close to 14 I think. I have an almost 10 year old daughter and she is not even close to showing signs of puberty where as many of her friends are.

Interesting...

DS is in college and is 6'2" and was the shortest of his friends through elementary and middle school until he hit is growth spurt. Ended up the tallest.

DD, now 16, was always just about off the growth chart when toddler, elementary school age. Towered above her friends - at one point, she was a full foot taller than a couple soccer teammates.

She's 5'10" and is done. Stayed the same height for the last year.

Dad is 6'2" and Mom is 5'6".

In our extended family, which is a tall family to begin with, the noticeably big toddlers all grew up to be noticeably tall adults. The girls are 5'10 or taller and the boys are 6'4 or taller. Some of the average sized toddlers also are now that tall as well, but many are not.

I’m curious about this too. Kid has always been 99% in both height and weight but both of us are actually on smaller side. People regularly think she’s several years older than she is. I can’t believe this will keep up given her genetics but we will see!

Both my boys are tall.

Wife is 6'0 and has wide hips and Dad is 6'2 and has a nfl linebacker build.

I put more weight into mom height than dad height. My mom is 5'9 and my dad is 6'0. However, my mom's dad was 6'5. And my wife's mom's dad was also really tall.

lol. You are not “a pretty average sized” at 5’8.

6 feet is not 99% so at some point he dropped down.

It’s around 90th percentile, taller than most men.
