They have in 2018 but it was a serious storm and people were without power for days from it.

Ok but just wind? No rain, etc?

Yes and it was an absolutely insane storm. OPM closed too. It rolled in on a Friday morning and about 2 dozen schools were still without power by Monday. It was bad, and it was I think early March too so it was also very cold.

My memory is it was in Jan/Feb, but I could be wrong. We live with a forested park in our backyard and watched 4 trees go down in that storm. It was a good call from our perspective.

She’s completely terrified at the prospect that she might have to deal with her own kids for an extra couple of hours.

It was Friday, March 2, 2018. A tree fell on our house.

Yes, that was one of the most impressive weather events in the last couple of decades here. Winds gusted to 71 mph at Dulles, exactly the same as the 2012 Derecho.

Tomorrow will be nothing like that. Just a chilly, breezy Fall frontal passage.

Yep, we had siding damage on our house.

It was an all day wind storm in 2018, but tomorrow's forecasted wind isn't predicted to be what it was that "Wind Day" in 2018.

We lost most of the shingles on one side of our roof. We knew it was going to need to be replaced soon, but we weren't expecting the shingles to blow off in a storm.

The first snow day call thread brings such joy to the heart! ☃️

Get your BINGO cards ready for the 2025 FCPS Winter Posts. Fill your card with these items:

❄️ Someone posts that the weather calls should be made by location, not for the entire county

❄️Mention of the Garza Snow Day

❄️Mention of the infamous Wind Day of 2018

❄️Someone says that the county should be divided into 3-4 smaller school divisions each with their own central office.

❄️Mention of Ryan McElveen posting closing on Twitter

❄️Someone pissed off at Reid for closing schools

❄️Someone praising Reid for making the right call for closing school

❄️ A post about how schools in (insert midwestern/northern state) would never close for this weather and that we’re all wimps

❄️Any post about what their local school’s parking lot looks like

❄️Post mentioning how all the side streets in their neighborhood are a “sheet of ice” and that no bus is getting down it.

Any more?

Someone pissed off at Reid for NOT closing schools.

Accusations that parents who don't want school closed are afraid to spend time with their kids. Counter-accusations that parents who do want school closed don't value education.

Here’s my PSA about roofs following storms: That 2018 storm damaged my roof, which was 19 years old. The roof started leaking when it rained hard. The shingles on our house had been discontinued, so we couldn’t just replace some of them. Homeowners insurance covered the cost of a new roof ($16,000), minus our $1000 deductible. Anyone with an older roof should have it inspected after a storm with really high winds or hail, because homeowners insurance covers that kind of damage. Generally, you have one year from the date of the storm to file a claim.
