Second-worst attendance in the Big Ten in 2022. |

My daughter picked Virginia Tech over in state UMD. She had it stuck in her head that college park would be like high school. She wasn’t obsessed with Virginia Tech but was happy to be going. (She was accepted but didnt get to visit UGA and OH State. It was Covid and everything was messed up. )
Transferred to Maryland second semester of freshman year. Was so happy!!! Blacksburg was too rural. And CP was not high school part 2. And the $$ savings was wonderful and should not be over looked. |
Of course they care more. Theirs nothing else to VT and where it's located. |
Yea, UMD is huge. It doesn't have to be HS 2.0 if you don't want it to. It's so big and diverse you can find different groups. My kids hate rural settings. They like having a metro nearby to go into DC, and even NY. DC goes to NY often from UMD taking the metro/amtrak/bus, not to mention the proximity to so many jobs for internships year round, which DC also has. |
How was VT too rural? |
|
Just specific to her it felt isolated. Granted, there were no football games and big parties, She went on hikes and did lots of outdoorsy stuff. I would chalk it up to Covid however the big lesson to share is : UMD was way better than she expected being in state and 35 -45 mins from home. She felt connected to DC, made friends from all over and really loved the business school. There really was no point to pay extra money when UMD was an excellent option. She loved that I could swing by and treat for groceries. We could pick her up for major family events etc.
it felt far away when she wanted it to be, and then felt close when she wanted it to be win win |
| Absent a scholarship, the value proposition is not there for VT OOS vs instate UMD. |
| UMD offers so many more opportunities that are not available in a rural setting. VT is the biggest thing happening in Blacksburg. If you want internships, summer jobs, coops, you are much better off in college park. |
| Would you choose UVA over UMD in state? |
Touche! lol! |
Neither would I, and I certainly wouldn't pay for OOS to be in College Park. It's such a dump. |
OMG you know nothing about VT! Football is huge! Pep is huge. There's frat and sorority houses. How do you not know this!!!! |
