Also, the inequities in access to theater and arts classes as well as extracurriculars are real.
Kennedy HS doesn't have a theater program at all. Last year, 8 out of 40 middle schools didn't. And of those 8, 4 were Title I middle schools. Your school zone dictates what activities you get to explore during your secondary school days. |
32 M schools had a theater program? That's impressive tho those 8 should've also! |
+1 IMO, they put on some amazing productions with the full orchestra. I've seen 3 so far. |
| Definitely some inequities. I've never seen Forest Oaks Middle on the list of productions. |
| FYI MCPS staff get free entry and a plus 1 by showing their ID. |
Kennedy not having a theater program is shocking, and I'll admit to not quite understanding how that happened. My understanding is that schools have an allocation for faculty advisors for various clubs/activities. Were they unable to recruit someone to fill this role? Are they using the funds for something else? It just seems like such a shame, not just for potential student actors but also for all of the stage crew kids who could be getting first-hand experience with a variety of trades. |

| Yes as a HS, wonder why not |
| Kennedy doesn't? But they used to, right?? |
They did, but it went away last year and has not come back. I know that's a school with a lot going on, and maybe having even one show a year isn't a big priority, but it just feels like a shame for the kids who won't get the experience. |
| How about the Middle school that feeds to Kennedy? Did the MS have drama program? |
| Loiderman has a great program. |
| Can different HS work together to provide drama as an after school activity if a school doesn't have a program? |
| For parents with kids in theatre, did they continue in college? |
Anyone go to Broadway from MCPS? |
