Thoughts on addressing misinformation?

I’m a democrat and upset about the election—but the pettiness expressed here doesn’t make us look good or win votes (which should be the point!). These are battles that need to be fought with evidence and empathy day in and day out, not with censorship.

If only I could quit dcum the way I have twitter… Alas, the parenting and SN advice is too good so I tolerate the echo-chamber ridiculousness that only seems to value the rights of trans athletes and hamas sympathizers.

Why do you so easily engage in slander like calling those who oppose genocide "Hamas sympathizers"? Is that useful to constructive conversations? Would it be similarly helpful if posters referred to you as a "genocide sympathizer"?

Wil reporting from now on.

And don’t bother gaslighting with, “oh, Democrats don’t do that!” They certainly do. You just happen to agree with them - even if they’re spewing utter nonsense that none of you ever call them out on.

Examples?

Seriously? One recent example is the thread about Stephen King supposedly being kicked off Twitter/X. Oh, the outrage! The gnashing of teeth! Turns out, it was simply fake news (duh) and the thread was deleted.

Other examples are the insane posts claiming Trump will “round up black and trans people and put them in camps!” Again, more outrage and clutching of pearls. When citations are requested, sudden silence.

Another one is the fake claim that Trump’s administration will be stopping POC and demanding their “papers” to see if they’re citizens. WTAF? Or how about the claim that women will “lose their credit cards and right to vote”? I mean, do any of you have even the slightest idea of how utterly crazy you sound?

I could go on and on but there’s no need. You are fully aware of what I speak and the deliberately obtuse act / gaslighting isn’t funny or cute. It’s tiresome and hypocritical.

Np. Why are you here then? If you can't take it or don't like it there are plenty of places for you to go.

You won, remember?

Thanks, Jeff for all that you do!

So, rather than honestly admit the left puts out its OWN propaganda and misinformation, you simply tell me to deal with it (which is admitting it, btw) or leave? How typical.

Were you one of the people saying that it was ridiculous to worry about RvW back in 2016?

Anyway, you can report misinformation if you find it?

I do and will continue to do so.

Here’s another example of liberals spreading misinformation: “Trump wants reparations for white people.” https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/45/1239987.page

He has NEVER said that and of course, no one on the thread can quote him. It’s absolute BS, yet still the thread hasn’t been deleted.

Have you considered changing how you handle them going forward? Delete and block? Registered users for politics?

I know the issue goes way beyond DCUM but since you do have some control your platform I was wondering if you've thought about doing things differently going forward. Or maybe at this point you're ready to just cash out and retire?

Well what about posts like this? Why do they get to stay? He didn't say that at all so its misleading too.

DP who is left-leaning. You are correct. He didn’t use the word “reparations” but he did use the word “restitution.” Some commentators on the left took the quote below and interpreted it to mean reparations for white people. Take a look yourself and see what you think. it kind of sounds like a form of reparations to me, but maybe that’s just semantics.

Also, if at any time you think something is false information, you should report it.

In his July video, Trump said:

Furthermore, I will direct the Department of Justice to pursue federal civil rights cases against schools that continue to engage in racial discrimination. And schools that persist in explicit, unlawful discrimination under the guise of equity will not only have their endowments taxed, but through budget reconciliation, I will advance a measure to have them fined up to the entire amount of their endowment. A portion of the seized funds will then be used as restitution for victims of these illegal and unjust policies, policies that hurt our country so badly.

No votes are won or lost here.

I wonder if there is a way to fight back with a counter-flood-the-zone, and to do it across all social media. For example, open, transparent bots for good rather than the current arrangement of stealthy bots for evil. Have a community curated bank of calmly written and well reasoned fact checks with sources and citations and have monitoring set up on social media to detect the disinformation and automatically respond, along with AI agents to look for any new politics-related topics on social media that are generating controversy or viral activity and alert the community to research the item and write up the fact check for it. Then the trolls spreading disinformation will be outed and countered everywhere they go, and it will make their lives so much harder and their techniques so much less effective. I'm sure there are people and organizations out there who would be willing to support and resource something like that.

Reparations vs restitution doesn't really change much in terms of meaning. Trump said what he said and trying to claim he didn't because of exact terminology doesn't cut it.

Sure - as long as bots from ALL SIDES are called out. But somehow, I don't think you'd like that too much.

...PP said "open, transparent bots"...

I think that it’s bizarre that the FBI and CISA can’t figure out a way to protect DCUM.

Their workers get their recipes and school tips here. Why can’t they stand up and figure out how to keep Russia from using DCUM as a playpen for propaganda trainees?
