As a woman with zero style, the beauty board has always been helpful and kind to me when I have a question.

The health board can be helpful too.

I've gotten some good recommendations from the Book Club, and also some good advice for which books to steer away from/not bother with. I'd say it's 75% helpful.

College and University: 60% lunatic Type A parents with kids with 4.7 GPAs and 1560 SATs. They're all applying to Pitt.
20% good advice and good ideas for colleges people might not have thought about.
10% bad, outdated advice.
10% bickering about Northeastern, Wake Forest, and Juniata.

Food and Cooking: Probably the most helpful! I would say 60% good ideas and interesting looks into what people eat.
25% restaurant recs that don't affect me because I don't live in the DMV
15% random entertainment

Jobs and Careers: 50% helpful
30% Fed whining
20% generational griping

Diet and Exercise: Used to be better. Lately, 90% useless chatter about weight loss drugs
10%: I'm 5'4". How much should I weigh.

Eldercare 90% eff them but get the money (subset 70% THEY ARE ALL ABUSIVE NARCISSISTS) 10% people that actually need help or can offer help

This is literally the only remotely normal little corner of DCUM.

Anonymous wrote:Infertility was so helpful for me when I was going through it 10 years ago. Thank you to everyone who helped me, and I tried to keep responding to the board for the few years while everything was still fresh in my mind.

Agreed. This is how I found DCUM and it is the most sane and helpful infertility discussion I was able to find 6-8 years ago when I was going through it.

Don’t even bother asking about shoes. It’s all recommendations from people with bunions and bizarre foot disorders who only wear orthopedic shoes.

100%
And don’t forget the people who respond to every “is this in fashion?” question with “whatever you feel most comfortable in is in fashion”
And the constant recommendations for Danskos. On the FASHION forum, not the health forum.

Home improvement is really helpful! I don’t think many people go there, that’a probably why

The parenting forums are the most helpful. Sometimes I'll read the OP post, think about what advice I'd give, then read the other posts and find way better advice. It's really helped me be a better parent.

Infant/elementary parenting forums - 90% helpful, 10% wtf.

DCPS forum: 20% helpful, the rest mostly rehashing the same old conversations, and always changing the subject to BASIS.
Anonymous
Private School Forum - 90% unhelpful. My lease favorite forum by far.
