U Mary Washington
Lafayette, Susquehanna Gettysburg

Goal is to be under $60k after merit aid. Some of these are more reaches than others. Do does not know their major yet but likely not stem.

This is a very good list. You are doing it right.

Following this. 3.88W, 1250, 5 APs, DC catholic. Similar list to the above with more reachy schools: UVA, Wisco, Tulane, Clemson, Miami, Richmond. Non-STEM major.

How about Catholic University?

Too close, wants OOS/out of region (other than UVA and Rich)

I say this as a parent of a kid with higher stats who applied and it was really a pipe dream.

+1

This is an example of what parents on other threads were talking about regarding UVA's admission rates.

mine didn't want south, but wanted school spirit. loving first semester at Marquette so far. LOVING it.

FCPS kid, 3.8w with 1300 SAT (mostly TO on applications), these are some applied to:
UVA
Pitt
Penn state
UDel
UMD
WVU
UNCG
College of Charleston
Bama
Auburn

Goal is to be under $30k after merit aid. I don't want to spend this even, but more merit or needs based grants are probably unlikely and this is a 4 year max I think we can live through on both pay as we go and repayment loan.

The only one of these that might be under 30 K with merit aid Might be Bama. Every other one of these is going to be about 50 to 60 K oos and 35-45k With tuition and room and board in-state.

If you really want to be under 30k Tuition and room and board, in Virginia in-state you should consider gmu, cnu and maybe umw. Jmu all in is $32k. All the flagship schools will be higher

What other schools were on his list? Sounds like my kid.

Also, those stats aren’t high enough to get merit aid at those schools oos schools, except maybe bama who is good about merit aid.

Pitt, Penn state, etc you need more like a 1450 sat for money and Even then it is like 5K off of 57,000 total.

With that SAT, they don’t get much at Alabama anymore. Merit there is transparent, and has shifted up to require higher GPAs / test scores.

EXACTLY. Hard pressed to find ANYWHERE under $30k all-in.

All the New England state flagships, gives us a range of acceptance rates from 97 (Maine) down into the 50s (UConn) though his first choice major is more competitive at some schools. We assume he'll have some nice choices though may not get first choice (or any choice) at all schools. Unweighted GPA something like 91.5, lots of service and sports ECs, 1330 SAT. He'll be happy, he wants big school with sports and spirit etc.

Ugh same. Son has his heart set but knows it’s unlikely.

Why? The acceptance rate is like 80%. Unless you're talking about the University of Miami.

U Vermont, U MN, Wisconsin, Regis U, Gonzaga, U Puget Sound, Santa Clara, U of San Diego, Providence ..

A lot of jesuits, a lot of state schools, kind of all over the place. ..

MU offered him merit and made it easy

My daughter is looking for a big state school although there are a couple outliers on the list
3.68 UW
1100 SAT (TO)
Clemson
UMD (in state for us)
VT
PSU
UD
JMU
Furman
Elon
Miami University
Bama (already accepted)
Ole Miss (already accepted)
Michigan State (already accepted with merit)

This. And honestly I'm really struggling with this. I feel like my kid is 'below average" because of his for real B average GPA (will be lucky to graduate with a 3.4UW), but SATs are in the 99th percentile, has taken 11 APs, and is an AP Scholar with Distinction. No one seems to know what to do with a kid like this.

If you are full-pay, I would apply widely (if he will even agree to do it). Boys with that profile, especially full pay boys, can end up doing quite well.
