Where are your average kids top picks?

I say this as a parent of a kid with higher stats who applied and it was really a pipe dream.

Only bc UVA is test optional. Lots of inflated 4.0s getting in, who, if they req test scores would have little to no chance (true of so many “top” schools).

ED UVA - 30% acceptance rate in state, 20% oos.

Excellent choices!

I have a question about Loyola MD. It seems like a great option all around, but would it be problematic for someone who is not Catholic and did not go to Catholic school? I know it's open to all faiths, and the Jesuit philosophy is very appealing, but I do want to know if my DC would feel comfortable as someone who did not grow up with religion part of family life at all.

Jesuit schools are generally very welcoming and inclusive. Follow the university’s social media pages and you will also get a sense for the culture there. Seems like a solid place. While my family is Catholic, my junior who is college searching is not religious and felt at ease there. They also have an interfaith space (Fava Chapel) for students of any faith to use for prayer, worship, quiet reflection, etc.

My dd got into one. She loves it, but it is SO expensive. We likely won't do that which is too bad.

Very few people pay the full price. My kid goes to a Jesuit school that costs close to $75k but I pay around $30k. Do the net price calculator.

Ditto ... give it a shot! I hope she loves her in-state option, too.

My own is at a rigorous private (not dcum), has a B average, all honors and AP classes, 98% SAT test score, but is bottom half of rank. She’s applying to average schools, not interested in reaches, does better in a less intense environment.

Mine is at public and similar, though a little lower SAT. More like low-mid 90s% for SAT. He is applying to all targets and safeties and we all feel great about this decision. It's been mentioned already but I love Loyola Maryland for this kid. It has school spirit and some D1 sports, beautiful campus and reputation for friendly students, but he'll get a lot more attention and support for things like internships than at a large state school. I think it would be great to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond after coming out of a very competitive DMV public where he feels like he's nothing special. In the end it's his decision and he'll probably end up choosing a rah-rah state school (he's already gotten in to a couple), but he has agreed to go to a couple of admitted students days and make an informed choice.

Applying in-state:
VCU (guaranteed admit, but wants VCU Arts so who knows)
GMU (likely)
UMW (likely)
JMU (target I think? maybe a slight reach)
W&M (reach, will apply TO, has sibling there)
UVA (even TO I think it's impossible, especially RD)

A very good list. Have you considered CNU as it seems to be a school with a strong preforming arts program?

Anonymous wrote:Thank you for doing this thread. I tried last year and it ended up developing into a thread for kids with high stats.

Would love if this thread can keep at a ceiling of 3.5W and 1200 SAT ish. Would be helpful for so many.

Ithaca
UMW
Elon
Ursinus

But where does the kid with the 3.3UW 1450 SAT belong?

In the library studying! Kid has the smarts to get a higher GPA if he puts in the effort.

That depends entirely on the high school. My kids studied, are smart, and were both ~3.3-3.4 and 1430-1490 SATs at a school that does not inflate grades. It only takes one or two flakey weeks for a kid to make getting an A in 3 or 4 classes out of reach.

You are not getting into Emory with a 3.6.

Agree. Scranton offered a merit/FA grant that took annual price to 33,000.

York College of PA gave average DS enough merit to make it similar to in-state full-pay in VA. Plus guaranteed engineering school.

Any LACs for average students?

FCPS kid, 3.8w with 1300 SAT (mostly TO on applications), these are some applied to:
UVA
Pitt
Penn state
UDel
UMD
WVU
UNCG
College of Charleston
Bama
Auburn
UCF
Still may do other applications for VCU, Old Dominion, Randolph Macon, or Marymount, if needed.

Goal is to be under $30k after merit aid. I don't want to spend this even, but more merit or needs based grants are probably unlikely and this is a 4 year max I think we can live through on both pay as we go and repayment loan.

DCUM: Where are your average-stat kids applying to? Let's hear some suggestions for students who don't have a 3.8

Also DCUM: Here are the competitive schools my kid with a 3.8 is considering.

Yea, 3.8 wgpa OOS UMD and for UVA is kinda low.

Came here to say the same. My kid is at Dayton (Marinist, not Jesuit) and we pay equal to MD in-state school.
