It’s 50% if you turn something in. 0 if you don’t.

Is that universal policy now? My kid’s teacher told him two weeks ago it was too late to get credit but 50% for turning in would have made a huge difference.

We have some teachers who have strict deadlines, others are flexible.

My son’s high school gives zero until assignment turned in and then points deducted for late work. There are deadlines when it is too late to turn in which I support. My son got too comfortable in Middle School with turning in late work and everything could be retaken or resubmitted.

I agree thats difficult to adapt to different classes and teacher policies within canvas. It’s much harder to figure out what’s due in each class and keep organized.

At the highschool where I teach, we are strongly encouraged to give 50% for assignments that were never turned in

Strongly encouraged by who and why? How is it helpful to students?

No, it depends on the teacher. Some honor that, some just give a zero.

Very inconsistent and unfair to students. This is a policy or admin issue. Should be enforced one way or another by someone

DD is a junior and a teacher seems to have decided at the last minute not to grade a major project for the quarter that would have impacted her grade. There was no announcement. The teacher just didn't grade it for this quarter. Is this allowed?

Is there anything to do at this point?

If the teacher has enough grades in the grade book for quarter 1, I don’t think you can do anything. Your dd could ask teacher nicely to please include project in quarter 2 grades. I’m assuming that is what the teacher plans on doing.

Let’s just say we are coerced by administrators and principal to give 50% for assignments that were never submitted. The administrators at my school are masters of spin. I don’t believe they really care about the students all that much as most of them are focused on moving up the ladder as fast as possible

I know you can’t name the school, but what are the demographics and/or reputation of the school? From what you know, is this pretty common among all schools?

DC had an excused absence at the beginning of December and did the assignment the first day back. The teacher never bothered to grade it. I followed up with them at interims and again the week before the end of Q1 and was assured they would do this. They didn't. Should I report them to the administration or just let it go? It does seem wrong that a kid's grade gets penalized for being sick, but what should I do?

This has happened to my kids too. Infuriating. If the outcome affected the overall quarter letter grade, I’d probably continue to follow up. If not, I’d probably leave it.

Yeah. I don’t even care if it’s 50 percent or 0 or if the deadline and due date are the same or different days or whatnot. Pick a way and just have it be consistent for everyone. There is no reason for it to be inconsistent. None.

It’s a mix at my kids school. Some are doing 0 some 50. The zero is a grade killer for my ADHD kid. 504 never followed so will be getting w Bs for ungraded work.

Just wonder - After 11/4, can a teacher go back to change the 1st quarter grades for any reason?

It is a DCC high school. I don’t know if this happens at all schools or not but it is frustrating that MCPS policies are applied differently at different schools.
