The trick or treaters have no manners

Fewer and fewer kids are being taught even basic manners now.

I am a teacher who teaches tteenagers. Every day, students speak to me and other adults in what I consider a rude tone. For example:

"I don't have a pencil. Give me a pencil."
When I model for them, " You should ask, 'May I please borrow a pencil?'," they look at me dumb-founded, as though they've never heard some use the word "please."

"I don't have my charger, and my computer is dead."
When I say, "You may borrow this charger," they just grab it out of my hand.
When I say, "You're welcome!," they say, "For what?"

They do not hold the door for ANYONE as they enter the door. I can count on one hand the number of students I've seen hold a door for someone else within the past two months.

Based on what I've seen at the school where I teach, I am not at all surprised that kids aren't expressing gratitude for candy tonight.

I’ve had maybe 30 kids all very polite in 22207. High school to maybe K age.

Depends on what you are giving out. Anything besides full size snickers and you want gratitude? Did you even see the thread about how garbage chocolate is this year? /s

That makes me sad. They’ll be at a disadvantage in the workplace with such poor social skills and they won’t be able to teach their own children skills they don’t have. Has there been a drop off in manners post Covid or just a steady decline for a long time?

Man, sometimes I'd prefer rudeness over the silent slow blinking I get all the time. It's so creepy. It's like they're so attached to their phones they've become part bot themselves.

+1

Plus: I’m wearing a costume as I pass out candy and I’ve received multiple compliments on my costume as well as my decorations.

Same here. Kids and parents have been so nice and friendly.

I’m a total Miss Manners most of the time, but it’s Halloween. I want the kids to have fun, and I’m focusing on being cheerful and complimenting the kids who do say thank you rather than brooding over the ones who don’t.

Tomorrow I’ll return to my grouchy self!
