My kid's school is asking for my driver's license number

OK, but MCPS can't do anything with the drivers license number itself, so why are they asking for it? They don't have access to DMV systems to verify the information.

The system is checking it against the sex offender registries.

But Maryland allows offenders to have their names expunged.

It’s just for security. If you have an issue with it, just don’t visit the school.

Expunged names won’t match the check.

Either it’s new or it’s a hyper aggressive admin at your school. I went last week, no ID check.

ID check is only for adults working with kids.

I agree that giving away my driver's license number to a school database might give me a pause since it's not clear if that data is full secured.

OP here. This. They are asking through Google forms. Not encrypted.

Sex offenders can't send children to school?

What google form?

I don’t understand why you think it’s a problem? Please explain? It’s a public record.

I wouldn't fill out the online form due to privacy issues, but I would show the DL at the event.

Unfortunately, government entities are specifically excluded from the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). If a business did this, it would be illegal.

They can’t be on school grounds.

They can, but they can't come to school events during the school day.

+1

Our ES has a computer where you scan your drivers' license if you are going in the classroom to volunteer. It prints out a visitor badge. The first time, it also takes a photo but on subsequent visits, it prints out with the same photo. If you are just picking up yoru kid, you still have to show your license but it's only to check that the name printed on it matches the name of a person authorized to pick up the child. They do not capture the other information on your license.

If you are uncomfortable with the ID scan, you don't have to volunteer at the school. There's no requirement to do that.
