Alternatives to Duke

I student who thinks they can get in to Duke can't figure this out?
Here is what a critical thinker might do.....
What schools are represented through your high schools insta page for where students were going last year?
Pick a similar High School and see where students went
Are any of these interesting?
Go onto Scoir / Naviance for your school and see where kids who applied to Duke also applied

This isn't rocket science

I went to Duke and unless there’s some very specific engineering subject or something like that your child is wanting to pursue, I can’t imagine how the undergraduate classes differ very much among the schools people are tossing out.

Thanks. Vandy on the list but others not quite academically appealing to DC. Lehigh ahead of Wake, Miami and Tulane.

Wow, none of the top publics are good enough and all the other privates are beneath you. Seems like you have Duke, Vandy, Stanford, Northwestern, and ND but with your discerning taste imagine NW and ND are too cold.

The Power 5 schools have been listed. Maybe Gonzaga and Georgetown if Georgetown ever gets the basketball decline reversed.

Some poster on this thread seems very cranky this morning!

Sorry about that OP. Ignore the negativity.

You’ve gotten some good options:
Vandy
Wake
BC
Northwestern
Villanova
USC maybe?

By refusing to consider a school like UVA simply because it’s public is silly. It’s probably the closest thing out there to Duke and is easier to get into and cheaper. And isn’t that what you mean by “alternative?”

+1. Seriously, good luck OP. Your child seems determined to be disappointed.

I’m more than certain the child is already a disappointment to this parent. Private school only. I wonder who installed that in this student?

I got the feeling the post was putting down Wake's academics.

Which is bull, considering it still is known as Work Forest

Northwestern
Notre Dame
Vandy

in that order

I have never heard that and I grew up in that area.

Duke and Wake were more peer schools, along with Davidson, when I attended in the 1900's, but now Duke just seems ridiculous. Every alumni event has someone telling us our kids shouldn't bother applying, but can we still give them some cash or gift Duke something in our will thaaaaaanks so much.

DS loved Duke. Also applied to Davidson, CMC, Tufts, Georgetown and Notre Dame.

Agree, the process has a way of humbling families like this.

Kentucky if he likes the basketball aspect of Duke.
