Where to wear a ballgown?

Most women wear cocktail dresses to the charity galas in the DMV. You could look very out of place in a ball gown.

People only dress up that much at the opera if it is opening night. And I mean opening night of the season, not even opening night of a particular production.

I want somewhere to wear a 10k Oscar de la renta dress.

Also those NYE events at Big downtown hotels like Marriot wardman park. It's an excuse to go all out.

What’s the difference?

Links, please.

Are you OP? Did you simply mean formal gown instead of ballgown? Because a ballgown has a huge skirt with a crinoline underneath ... like Cinderella. They are hard to move in and sit in. Hard to get into a car as well. I think of quinceanera parties when I think of the ball gown. Older women don't really wear them.

Here is a ball gown:

Most adult women wear something with a silhouette more like these to a formal event:

Don't we all, lol.

I'm convinced this is much of the motivation for women who enter Mrs. pageants. It's all about wearing the gowns.

This is the best idea, thus far. Most of the other ideas cited here are occasions for a cocktail dress at best.

You could definitely wear that to a charity thing where you just buy a ticket. Like the Meridian Ball, you could definitely wear that dress to that.

Gorgeous!

I’ve seen similar silhouettes on cruises and black tie weddings and galas in DC, NY, NJ, and Chicago.

Are you on the mailing lists for any embassies?

I’m OP and didn’t ask the difference but I appreciate this. I guess I really meant formal gowns … for the most part lol! I’m totally down for a ballgown event as well! 😊

I have to go a lot for work but wish I didn’t TBH! Would much prefer once every couple of years. I think it is a bit like work travel - fun occasionally but tedious when frequent
