is it in theaters |
Could you possibly Google this to find out? |
Saw this movie last night. It started out at Requiem for a Dream levels of weirdness, then went full out splatter-fest. It was deranged and angry, and I mean that in a good way. |
I loved it! Demi Moore was BRILLIANT. I loved the french cooking scene.
I loved how Elisabeth couldn't bring herself to go on a date when she was her normal middle-aged self after Sue came into the picture, but absolutely nothing was holding her back once she was the Elisasue monster. Very relatable to me; once we get to a certain point we begin to let go of the insecurities and don't let them stop us from living our life. Did anyone else think the eager neighbor guy from across the hall was going to be the Substance version of the guy from high school? I was annoyed that she didn't make more of an effort to get she and Sue on the same page. Write a note or something! Record a video explaining what happens when Sue takes extra days of stabilizing fluid! Convince her that they need to work together! Instead the way she became grosser and messier made Sue resent her even more was like self-sabotage. But I guess that's the point and I'm looking through an ageist/misogynistic lens. Women of a certain age shouldn't have to beg for younger people to respect them and treat them like human beings. |
We saw it today - I went in feeling apprehensive of how scary it might be, but I fricking loved it. It was so sad, weird, funny, and - I think - insightful.
I don't think she and Sue could have been on the same page - more than they were. They were the same person, remember? And the fact that Sue did what she did at the end just shows Elisabeth would have done the same thing all over again, too. TL;DR: Aging itself is body horror and psychological torture. |
Came here to say it is now streaming on Amazon Prime, $19.99 or free with a 7 day Mubi trial, which we did and canceled. |
I suspect I'll love it too, but I am apprehensive about the gore. Don't have much of a stomach for that. |
I'm not watching it for the gore, but I appreciate that it was made, and hope Demi wins the Oscar for it. |
There was a Kenny G ad under this question ![]() |
It is very very gory at times. I had to fast forward through some parts. It is an excellent movie: stylish, interesting, and a great statement about aging. Acting and directing were A++ so I recommend seeing it, even the way I did! |
It's a watered down version of the classic Japanese film Helter Skelter. |
The Oscars are to old fashion unfortunately. They have an aversion against horror movies so I doubt body horror will do well at all. Still hoping for a nomination though. That would be an awesome win in itself |
This should be good |
I think it fell apart in the last third of the movie, but it was really interesting at first. I really liked Demi Moores performance.
I didn’t think it really said anything new about aging or the pressure to look perfect or young. It’s definitely not like a Yorgos Lanthimos type of movie like the lobster where there’s unexpected twists or anything happening like that. Thought it was just gonna have a more interesting ending. Also, the violence and gore was Quentin Tarantino level towards the end, and it was kind of ridiculous. |
Wow, this was the wrong movie to watch in bed with the flu. The whole last hour felt like a hallucination. Lol. Glad Demi won the award though. |
