Alternate snack to chocolate

Same.

Occasionally I will nibble on a few squares of dark chocolate, but I have quit that habit. Reading about the lead and cadium content in most of the dark chocolate turned me off. It also made me angry - it was such a pleasure that I felt no guilt about.

Boom CHicka pop kettle corn. It's sold at the grocery store.

You can't eat what you don't have in the house. That's how I do it.

PP from 13:26

Occasionally I will buy dark chocolate granola (the healthiest, meaning expensive) and have that with milk. But that's a once in a while treat.
I figure with granola, at least there's some fiber and protein involved, and you have to measure it.

Very dark chocolate or nuts. Measure the portion, don't bring a container full to your desk. Eat small bites slowly so it has time to register in your brain.

There's a low calorie chocolate bar called Gatsby chocolate. It's like 5 dollars per bar and 180 to 210 calories for the whole thing.

If you're looking for an equal substitute, there isn't one. You just need to change your tastes or get yourself to the point where just one piece or two of dark chocolate satisfies the craving. After eliminating a lot of processed foods and sugary foods, and developing a better taste for dark v. milk chocolate, I've continued to have chocolate regularly: dark chocolate almonds mostly - and I bite them in two and make a smaller number last longer and seem like more; also Schogetten dark chocolate from Aldi which is cheap and comes in a pack of separated little squares - suck on one of those, maybe two, all's good. Lately, I've dipped them in peanut butter and that's actually more satisfying without continuing a taste or desire for more chocolate.

At least make sure your chips are dark chocolate - not milk or semi-sweet. Milk chocolate only makes you want more. Dark is much more satisfying.

I want to stop, and tell myself every day I won't do it, and yet 12:30 rolls around and I do it again. It's not so much a weight issue as it is a "I want to be healthier and have better self-control" issue (though if I lost 10 lbs I would not complain). What I think I need is a good substitute that will be healthier but also satisfy that mid-day craving. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I would remove them from your home. Honestly, I have no self control on the chips but, can manage one little dove bar ( dark chocolate) maybe switch to that?

Uuuggghhhh. This is so tough for me.

I can’t keep it in the house. I do buy it on very rare occasions but fully give in to the fact I’m eating the whole thing at an unhealthy rate.

I have been buying raspberry seltzers. No sweeteners added. But sweet enough to cut the edge.

As pp suggested, I also will grab a teaspoon of almond butter. Or blueberries.

Finally, I have gum and mints.

Good luck op. It’s a never ending balancing act. Life’s too short to abstain, but you have to keep an eye on health.

I do the Pb on spoon and then stick 5-6 chocolate chips on it. That’s very satisfying.

Or get some nuts you like and mix in a few chocolate chips and raisins. That will feel more filling and give you protein/fiber but still hit that chocolate craving.

I sometimes have the kind bars drizzled with chocolate.

Or a banana drizzled with a little Hershey syrup.

I also will drink hot chocolate, maid with ski milk, but definitely not sugar free. Sometimes I make it with a spoonful of cacao powder (supposed to be healthier), spoonful of sugar and squirt of vanilla, and just microwave the whole thing. Probably more healthy and less sugar than the prepackaged stuff? And the calcium and protein is good for you.

I have a teen that needs to be able to make roll house cookies on short notice so can’t avoid having the chips in the house!

I have the exact same problem. Like I could have written your exact post. I haven't found a permanent solution... I will be better and then slip, like the addict that I am. But the best solution, the only even temporary solution, is cacao. I get the kind you steep using a French press (Crio Bru is a brand on amazon). I am not a sweets person, though, just chocolate, so I don't add sugar, making it actually healthy. I really like the taste and the warm drink after lunch. And the best part is that it leaves the same chocolatey aftertaste. So, while it doesn't satisfy me quite up to the level of a handful of chocolate chips (I am such an addict !) , it does take away the craving. This especially works for me in the cooler months.
