No human population outside of Africa has been in its present location all that long in geologic terms. To the extent any population living today can be recognised as indigenous to Europe it is the Europeans.

European identities as they’re now conceived are generally pretty new. Germany wasn’t unified until relatively recently. Neither was Italy.

Then you have countries like Slovenia, which really didn’t exist 1918. Before that, there was no sense of being a Slovene.

Bottom line is, it’s complicated and the story really depends on which European country you’re talking about.

Of course there was a sense of being a Slovene prior to 1918; there is something called the Slovenian language that exists as a written language for over 1000 years.

My family are Lithuanian. Now ardently Roman Catholic - Lithuanian were among the last pagans in Europe pre conversion. Tha Language is one of the older ones too, a close relative to Sanskrit .

By this defn, they say that there are only 350-500 million indigenous people in the world, and so most people in the world are not “indigenous” even if they have lived on the land for centuries.

A modern Norwegian (by blood) descends from ancestral local populations, etc etc.

Think of it like this. Let’s say you and I both live in Pennsylvania. Fast forward 5,000 years. Your descendants are still in Pennsylvania. But they have intermarried with other folk and have a culture that looks fundamentally different from anything you or I might recognize. Let’s say I am from the Amish community and my descendants basically did not assimilate into the broader culture. They maintain a healthy distrust of outsiders and jealously guard their traditions. In 5000 years, they might be described as “indigenous” whereas your descendants are not. It’s really an academic/anthropological term which doesn’t make any sense in common usage.

Yes. All people came out of Africa, in different waves. Actually the Neanderthals came first and settled in Europe, then modern man, homo sapiens, came later. So only Neanderthals are indigenous Europeans.

(You can see the percentage of Neanderthal DNA you have in 23andme. Most people have a little, some people have more. The Neanderthal genes are associated with creativity, genius, as well as autoimmune susceptibility, and ADHD and ASD. Interesting stuff.)

The term "indigenous" typically doesn't refer to majority populations. In China, for instance, the Han aren't, but the Uyghurs and Tibetians are. In India, the Indo-Europeans and Dravidians aren't, but the various tribal groups are.
