DC Public and Public Charter Schools
|
I am always shocked that this is not more of public issue. So many MD residents use DC schools - in particular the preschool and preK. I but if they really did an audit it would be between 5% and 20% at some schools.
I think the only way to stop it is to have parents go to central office to prove residency - they know who has paid DC taxes and who has not. They know who gets public benefits and who does not. They know who lives in public housing and who does not. And of course to send some folks to jail for fraud also sends a strong message. But of course all DCPS cares about is high enrollment so nothing is going to change. |
| I meant I "bet if they really did an audit" |
| As long as DC residents don't make a fuss, why should DC govt care? And MD residents get the benefits |
Yes. My dad lived in DC, mom in MD when I attended SWW. |
| Sounds like one poster is having a conversation with herself.lol |
| The most important DC residents send their kids to private schools so they wont make a fuss. |
| And an equal number live in the district and go to MD schools under the same pretenses. I would bet that the trade is about equal. I know of many kids in MoCo who are using "the auntie". |
I call bullshit. |
I think she's right. MD schools have a much better reputation after all. I know you're all hot and bothered about the DC end of things, but please get some stats before you start accusing others. |
This is not right (though not the fault of Yu Ying)! I would love for my kid to attend Yu Ying yet I know the chances of his getting in are low. |
Just because they have a better reputation doesn't mean anything. MoCo does a good job making sure that non county residents don't use their schools. They double and triple check. |
Why does this MD bashing keep coming up? (And why can't I stop reading these posts? ) honestly, there has been more boundary fraud and political exceptions within DCPS than from MD. That's why the "once you're in, you're in" rule was ended. Charters have no incentive to let fraudsters in. They could lose their charters and funding. If a couple slip through, I'm sure there are way more DC families going the other way. DC has bigger issues than the marital or housing status of a handful of children. I'm more concerned about our tax status in general and all the loopholes for nonresidents. (Dont tell me to move, I can't and won't.)

You may call bullshit if you desire, but I know these people personally. Some of them went up to the Downcounty cluster schools. Even though some of them are not great, they are fabulous in comparison to nearly all of the DCPS high schools. I know of others who are in one of the W schools. |
| Rumor (and eyesight) has it that my school's PTA President (or "PCAT" as they call it) is a MD resident. Maryland License plates and all!! I feel robbed of my rising tax $, but what can be done??? She must have acquired some form of DC documents to register right?? |
As a two parent working family, we would hate to have to go to a central office to prove residency. I think it is sufficient to do it with pay stubs and lease/tax returns. |
