MD residents in DCPS

It's the beginning of the school year and with that brings new reports of students coming from MD and going to school in the District. It is illegal and fraud. Please out these parents, they are stealing your tax dollars!!!!

A four-year old girl I talked to in my neighborhood told me she lived in Maryland. The school she said she went to was not one of the "tier I" schools mentioned on this board.

many do attend tier 1 schools.

Sometimes the parents are divorced or split and one has an in bounds addy. I'd get more info.

She said she was staying with her aunt (pointing a couple doors down) for the weekend.

This happens every year. Of course there is always a reason, but until the administration does home visits, it will continue. Free PK3 for all!

I know they are stealing my tax dollars but for some reason I would not bring myself to out the parents. Unless their kid was beating on mine. Especially if I knew the family was hard up. If they were well off I might be more inclined - because they should at least be paying out of state tuition, and should not be getting into schools with long waitlists.

I'm glad you're not in my gene pool. These people are STEALING from you, robbing DC students, and they have free education in their state. This is why DC is such a hole.

It's really illegal and unfair for MD kids to be taking spots from DC kids. Plain and simple.

You must go to a good school or private. I say, put them in JAIL.

Uhm... believe it or not, some MD residents who send their kids to school in DCPS do pay the tuition to do so. Before lumping everyone from MD who sends their kids to DCPS into one pot and threatening jail and such, make sure it's not a case where tuition is paid and all is on the up and up. (Yes, I'm certain that most folks probably do not pay the tuition and use "auntie's" address, but some do pay tuition....)

It is actually not illegal to use their aunt's address because schools have no way to prove on the front end that it is not their permanent address. It is election year, we need Fenty or Gray to look into this matter.

Please see the residency requirement on DCPS

There is a residency verification period - and if you live in MD and use someone elses address you are committing fraud. Own it. Realize it. Parents from DC will find you and there are those of us who are not as shy about exposing you. If you made the decision to live in Maryland, then you have to go to school there too.

The only way to stop this is to have parents provid a copy of their paystubs as proof of residency. By allowing a utility bill to suffice as proof of residency is ludicrous. A person can simply have their sister, mother, or friend's pepco bill placed in their name to suffice the residency requirement. At Yu Ying last year it was known that at least one family resided in Maryland. I was aware of two. One of the parents had a condo in the city that tshe rented to tenants. The utility bills were in the parents name, but the parents and the student resided in Maryland. I am sure Yu Ying did their job based on the current DC law. That coveted spot(s) was taken from a District resident. A DC resident whose parent pay the high income taxes while putting up with the hassels of living in an urban environment and the disappointment of our elected officials. They, elected officials, need to review the policies for declaring residency for school enrollment purposes.

If one parent lives in DC and the other in MD or VA, can they choose which school district they want their child to attend?
