Remember when a lot of posters were upset that that driver on Rock Creek parkway killed three people and they had $50k in speeding tickets but never lost their license???

Why is this city so insane? Fking impound the cars. I hate this new era of progressive nonsense. I’m sorry but sometime people shouldn’t drive.

“If I had ran the light, I would have run her over,” he said. “She damaged my car.”

Wow, he said that to the press?

Dude was in a Range Rover. This isn't about "progressive" or whatever angle you're talking about. It's about a complete lack of any enforcement of assault committed by motorists when they are motorists. The USAO won't pursue charges even when people are killed in a flagrant fashion. The DC-AG won't do jack either.

They have tickets in a system, which they hide behind a license search. They should make this open data. Give a bounty to people who snag these aholes who have multiple thousands of unpaid tickets.

It is 100% the fault of progressive policy. Read up on why the progressive city council elected to allow speeding scofflaws to reregister their licenses or not lose them at all no matter how many speeding tickets they got. And this article is another example of how dangerous that is. They chose to allow this societal harm of dangerous driving so as not to deprive people of their livelihood. Basically progressive policy 101.

Federal judges in DC said that the law to require paying tickets was a due process Constitutional violation. That's why the DC Council was forced to change the Clean Hands Law. I had no idea about this until I read the federal judge's decision.

DC almost certainly made a very weak attempt to defend itself. All it has to do is hold a hearing prior to denying the license. I’m not sure what Charles Allen’s bill does but the Constitution in no way requires DC to leave reckless drivers on the street.

You are confusing Democrats and progressives. Most of us Democrats don’t consider ourselves to be allied with the progressive wing of our party.

The problem is that a lot of Republicans have decided that anyone to the left of Putin is a liberal. Jesus weeps at the actions taken in his name by the RNC.

No, there is no Progressive Party in DC. The problem is that Democrats here keep electing dangerous ideologues like Charles Allen, Brianne Nadeau, and Janeese Lewis George. Not to mention corrupt morons like Trayon Martin. And then nationally, Democrats here vote for Biden and Harris who give us dangerous ideologues like USAO Matthew Graves, not mention judges who actively work against the safety of our communities. This is what Democrats in DC vote for. It is Democrats in DC who are responsible for the absurdities in our criminal justice system. No one else.

That’s part of it. The main reason was the city council deemed it “inequitable” to take away drivers licenses from marginalized communities who need their cars to go to work. So it became an issue of economics vs safety and they, being super cool progressives, chose the former. This makes the whole city less safe.

Blame Republicans when you can, progressives when you must, and yourselves never. Its the DC way!

You basically can't make democracy work with that mindset. Bring on the fed takeover.

Progressives wanted to stop having traffic stops by police which - as I'm sure we've all seen examples of - can sometime escalate out of control bringing a small traffic infraction to a big issue. But also, ATE is always present, where police obviously can't be. And sometimes pursuit of a suspect in a car leads to a chase, which is exceptionally dangerous within our dense city.

The issue is that there is no enforcement of adequate penalties for when someone demonstrates that they shouldn't have a license or vehicle anymore. Hitting a person with a car is a small fine and maybe up to 30 days in jail - IF THE DC-AG even wants to pursue (which they never do). Killing someone with a car, unless the driver was drunk or engaged in some other crime beforehand, the US AO (which has jurisdiction here) doesn't give a shit and won't pursue either.

DC should be publishing the ticket data. They should create a bounty system to repossess vehicles. They should empower citizens to submit pictures or video when they spot dangerous driving and actually devote resources to following up on this. They should take away licenses for those who have an extreme pattern of poor driving. Not a few speeding tickets, but several to many dozens should be an instant NOPE NOPE.

Thank you for the dose of reality.

The fact of the matter is that MPD and DPW do not enforce the current laws. They could easily flag, tow, and impound the 2,000 or so highly problematic cars with dozens of tickets. Getting those 2000 vehicles off the road would make a massive dent in reckless driving in the District.

So, ultimately, it comes down to the Mayor to get MPD and DPW to do their job. There's way too much blame shifting between the Mayor, the agencies controlled by the Mayor, the City Council, the federal courts, the DC AG, and the USAO.

Just start impounding cars ASAP. Let these MD and VA clowns go whine to someone who doesn't care.

Sorry but I see 100x more red light and stop sign running in lower income parts of DC. It's pretty stunning to just see cars fly through intersections and a miracle more pedestrians haven't died.

Is there data where they tracked drivers to see if minorities actually drive as safe or safer than whites so the increased penalties can legit be called racist? I have worked hard over the last 20 years to unpack my own biases, but I will say the most batsh*t crazy drivers I have seen are not whites. Every single person who has threatened me as a pedestrian, every person I see who drives like a d*** around my kids' school, etc. no matter what I try to tell myself about confirmation bias. I will say I think part of it is when that person appears to be low income, my guess is that they were not brought up to value themselves, value life, value community in the same way — they were not valued themselves by their families or society growing up, so it's sad they drive like they DGAF if they kill someone. Disadvantage goes to the roots, sadly. Driving is a privilege and nobody, no matter how much they rely on driving, is guaranteed the right to drive. Unfortunately America has a horrible reliance on cars.

What would it take for 100% enforcement of traffic laws? I want every driver who goes through a red light to be ticketed, every driver who speeds to be ticketed. And those who have lots of tickets should have their license taken away. If you drive without a license you should go to jail for awhile.

I don’t care about the impact. I want laws to be enforced. If they are enforced for awhile, people will change their behavior.

Are his tags registered in DC or out of state? That could make a difference.

In any rate, DC is a joke. It’s cars with dead tags on my street and even calling 311 is no help.

If there is the slightest bit of inequity, it would be illegal.

They issue the tickets and don’t collect the fines? What’s the point. Law abiding citizens like myself are the fools. To renew our tags we have to pay the fines, ridiculous. Wish I had a driveway I would register my car in Maryland.
Anonymous
More blood on the hands on those who thought it was a good idea to decriminalize crime. Stupidest thing I’ve ever seen.
