For Langley/McLean, how many AP classes should a student shoot for to be taking a most rigorous courseload

OP here. Thanks I was suggesting to my kid 8-11 will work.

Is it frowned on by colleges to take APs online instead of at Langley/McLean? Seems an easy way to get out of the difficult courses and it sounds like the FCPS Online campus is easier.

Yes it is

If AP World is available as a freshman, take it. Learn about the world you live in.

The best reason to take it in 9th grade is that it’s one of the hardest APs so if you don’t do well, at least it’s in your 9th grade year.

I believe up until this current year(possibly one was added last year) the only AP class freshman could take was AP comp sci.

Take at least one AP in each of the five main subjects, and as far as you can in your area of interest. Also, at least one of the science APs should be Bio, Chem or Physics…. AP Env Science is not considered as rigorous.

Taking five social studies AP and five in other areas won’t be as impressive.

This. The STEM kids will have a more rigorous junior year even if they don't want it. Our neighbor questioned DS the other day on why he's taking 5 APs this year; says her kids only took 2 or 3 per year and ended up at top schools. Ok, well, your kids' HS allows APs freshman and sophomore years; my kid's does not.

We walked off and he said he really felt there was no choice for him. Four or five is the default at his school for students who are STEM-oriented. They are already on the higher science track (3-year program beginning soph year) and are in calc bc as juniors as well. But no one thinks it wise to skip either AP Lang or APUSH.

Freshmen year take

AP Calc AB, AP World, assuming 4 years of english, no need to take AP lit or comp yet, lower level language class, AP Bio or AP Chem
3 AP's freshman year

Sophomore year
AP Calc BC (or multi, and if not offered take it at commun college), AP Euro, AP Bio or Chem not taken sophomore year, AP Environmental Science (if on stem path, if not, AP Art History)
4 AP's sophomore year

Junior year (the most difficult year)
Multivariable calc (take at local college if not available), APUSH, AP Stats, AP Comp Sci A, AP Lang
5 AP's junior year

Senior year (have fun and take slightly easier AP's!)

Diff/linear equations at local college, AP Composition, AP Physics C, AP Comp Sci Principles, AP Gov't, AP Econ, AP Psych
6 AP's senior year

With this schedule you have a put yourself in a position to have your application looked at.

Or, just turn it down a notch, and enjoy your high school years.

Not many kids are taking Alg 2 and Precalc in MS

This question is about Langley. Langley no longer lets kids take any AP freshman year except in exceptional cirumstances. Take 1-2 sophomore year, 3-5 junior year, 4-6 senior year.

DC had 11 APs, but none in hard sciences (only in AP Environmental Science), not in languages (3 years Chinese/2 years German), and "only" Calculus AB. DC did take AP Lang (but not AP Lit). DC also had a few Bs along the way.

This is not sufficient for a STEM focus, but it did work for DC's intended coursework.

This sounds like my DC. What were your DC’s test scores and GPA? Thanks.

3.8 UwGPA/4.3 WGPA/ 1500 SAT

I am sharing this to counter the constant drumbeat that DCs need all As in as many APs as possible in order to get into UVA with 1550+ SATs. They don't and my DC is an example, and not the exception that proves the rule.

Is this accurate? I know colleges say you should take the most rigorous available at your school but those schools have basically unlimited AP classes.

its not umber, it is quality of AP

Except you can’t do that at McLean or Langley. You have to take Honors Bio before AP Bio and Honors Chem before AP Chem. You can’t take AP World until sophomore year. You don't have to take AP AB calculus at all, you can just take AP BC Calculus after Honors Precalc.
