Anyone take a family trip to Egypt in the past year?

Those … are not the same countries, or even on the same continent.

So…recommendations for South Africa would have been more relevant? Are you sure about that?

Neither is remotely relevant. Just as it would be insane to respond to a post requesting travel tips for Ireland to respond with input on your trip to France or Greece.

We did a year and a half ago with a 7 and 9 yo. It was absolutely fabulous. We had a terrific time.

We started in Cairo, did the pyramids. Then spent a could of nights in the White Desert, which was spectacular and the best part of the trip. We spent a day with a local family so our kids could hang with an average Egyptian family. We came back to Cairo and flew to Aswan. Then we cruised up the Nile to Luxor with the standard stops along the way. We did a sunrise hot air balloon flight above Luxor. Then we flew back to Cairo and did a couple of days exploring Cairo and the museums. We loved the trip.

We hired private guides that were kid friendly and our kids learned a ton. There's a ton of accessible history and lots of immersive activities.

Thank you! I think I found a previous post and you had used Memphis Tours right? What were your ballpark costs and what did you ask for to get the above experiences?

Yes. I think our tour price for 4 people was about $12,000 including internal flights, but not the flight to Egypt. But we were part of a larger family group and we got our quote in 2022, so it's probably not super accurate now.

December is the busy season, so if you're going to book, I'd do so very soon. Memphis will put together a tour from your list of wants, likely adjusting the schedule based on the boat schedule for the cruise. Just watch that they don't book you for stupid flight times (middle of the night), hotels that are very far from the airport and sights, and that it's clear whether you have a group or private tour/transfer for each part of your trip. You'll likely end up eating mediocre food at the hotel if you don't schedule a restaurant, so if you want them to set up dining, make sure it's included.

Stayed three nights at FS Alexandria in a villa right on the med. Lots to see and do there. Went back to Cairo to FS Cairo Nile Plaza. Recommend both hotels and using Abercrombie and Kent. We travel a ton, including the Middle East, and you definitely want tours/transportation taken care of in Egypt. It is not at all like visiting Dubai or Doha from an infrastructure standpoint.

I don't trust the recommendation of anyone who vacations in Dubai.

This isn’t really travel. It’s being handled and sheltered. You need to figure out things on your own. If you did more than throw money at any challenge in life, you’d be more savvy and never make a comparison between Doha and Cairo.

Egypt is not a place for casual travelers to wing it.

What are you talking about? Egypt and Jordan almost border each other.

This is like someone asking for info about Sweden and someone else saying we went to Norway and loved it! Um….okay.

NP but I'd only want to do this being handled and sheltered. Sorry Egypt, some of your inhabitants ruined it for everyone.

Exactly. That poster is clearly jealous and has never been to Egypt. Why is it that the state department assigns off duty police and government officials to US tourists visiting through companies like this? It’s not for fun. Again, we travel extensively. Do we have lots of money? Yes? Sorry that depending on where we go, we use resources to make it as safe and enjoyable as possible.

PP here. I have been to Egypt and speak Egyptian Arabic, thank you very much. And I am somewhere far more exotic than that right now. Trust me, I am not jealous of you .

DP - this was the $12k total trip organized through a tour company? Or am I confusing posters?

+1…what a bizarre response (and implicitly racist) response.

?racist; Egypt is not sub-Saharan Africa

Which wouldn't be a wholly inappropriate response imo. Sweden and Norway have a lot in common. Someone who is exploring Egypt as an option may in fact be reassured by someone traveling to Jordan.

Yes. I've posted a longer version previously as well, if you want to search. We used Memphis Tours.

Puhlease

Like someone asking about NYC and someone answering “I haven’t been, but Chicago was great!”

Also more than a year but also used A&K and agree with both the hotel recs and using them. At times we did have additional guards in Cairo and also on the Nile, A&K took care of this without any request.
