APS heat advisory

APS used to be pretty tough. Bunch of pu$$ies now.

Anyone can look at the hourly weather forecast and make the call at a certain hour (including a margin of error). This wouldn't be an "on the fly decision" and it shouldn't inconvenience anyone. We don't have that many heat advisories so this isn't a huge deal for today, but it would probably make sense for APS to review going forward as it's only getting hotter.

I wonder if I would have gotten upset like OP when my kids were younger. Everything was a bigger deal back then. In hindsight, it wasn't really a big deal. I'll give OP some grace b/c of that, but would suggest that looking for trivial things to get upset about on day 3 isn't doing anyone any favors.

Even our principal was a bit snarky about having to have the kids go inside on such a nice morning. She clearly would have preferred having morning recess.

Posting on DCUM is not the same as being upset. People post about far more trivial things.

+1. The question is whether this was a good call. No it was not. It also probably made the teachers' jobs harder today.

I disagree. Kids already have very limited movement breaks during the school day when it's a known fact that being able to MOVE helps learning. We live in an area with rain, so sometimes they can't do out because of that. Adding "it's over 90 degrees" to the list limits the number of days student get to move their bodies while learning. I have 2 incredibly active elementary kids. We do walk to school, and they'll go outside later when they get home. But that is not a replacement for moving their bodies as a break from learning.

Is this the largest issue facing APS? No. But it's an example of how bad policies are written. "Oh there's a weather alert, keep kids inside to protect their health" can actually be damaging their health. So it should be discussed.

It’s one day. No additional days over the next two weeks forecast to be that hot and more than likely the last day of 2024 with a heat advisory.

If they canceled only recess after 1 pm then some parent will complain their kid didn’t get recess while other kids did in the morning. If you leave it up to school by school discretion then some parent will complain that teacher or school X didn’t do the same thing as school Y.

All you complainers are the reason that APS has to come up with a single consistent response to NWS advisories, but then you’re also going to find reason to complain about that.

I have plenty of gripes about APS, but this thread is proof that some parents will complain about everything. I feel bad for the poor teachers who have to put up with annoying whiny parents.

That's one of the weakest slippery slope arguments I've ever heard. Why don't we just cancel recess on any day it might rain too? That way some kids won't get recess when others have it cancelled for rain? Better yet, let's just do away with recess entirely? Why not? It's clearly of no importance to learning.

Chill the heck down. Most HVACs at these schools are not great at keeping the buildings cool. So getting the kids all hot and sweaty and then placing them in a room that is a humid 78 will lead to some folks with heat related illnesses. Sure the morning may have been cool enough, but it was still a dew point of 72 and very humid.

This is probably true but it is NOT the job of APS to appease every single parent. Nobody could do that!

OP was talking about morning recess. It was approximately 75 degrees and overcast at the time recess was cancelled this morning.

There's a huge difference between a heat advisory and rain, especially for young children.

It was 75 degrees with high heat only expected hours later. No one was at any risk. None.
