Thailand (Bangkok and Phuket). I was so worried about having issues with the water/food, mosquitos, heat and humidity, and just general culture shock. None of that was an issue (it was hot and humid, but there was plenty of A/C). The people are lovely, the vibe was laid back, and the food was delicious and so cheap. Would go back, and this was a place that I never wanted to go in the first place. |
OP here and I *loved* Bermuda. Would return in a heartbeat. It’s not particularly interesting but so, so beautiful. |
On my one and only trip to the Amalfi Coast I stayed in Ravello. Incredibly charming. |
Ghent, Belgium. Totally unexpected. Very small, not touristy and really enjoyed it. It's often overlooked by Bruges which is cute, but is very touristy and felt sort of Disney-ish to me. |
I also love Madrid. I think the people who don’t like it were probably there for only a day and didn’t get the chance to really visit the city. |
Bocas del Toro
And I’m obsessed with Anguilla. But I kind of assumed that would happen based on photos alone. |
Southwest
Hawaii Iceland Peru Costa Rica Bhutan Sri Lanka Thailand None of it was budget travel. Though you could go budget to all of them |
Vermont. It was exactly as you picture it—small towns, green mountains, laidback and friendly people. It made me want to buy hiking boots or take up skiing or do something else outdoorsy. |

Busan, South Korea. I didn't think I'd like it so much, but the beaches and surrounding areas are sooo clean. |
The Wild Coast, South Africa. Still my favorite place in the world. |
Looking at it from the “and you did not expect to” lens vs just all the spots I have loved: Lithuania. Surprisingly charming and interesting history. |
Why didn't you buy hiking boots? |
+1. Very nice country, was just there. |
