What private school/s have the best sports programs for boys + girls?

17:52 and 18:31 - I guess you guys are STA boosters. Instead of complaining on an anonymous forum why don't you bring this up to St. Albans. You play sports to WIN the game, and yes most importantly build character.

How do you know when Landon or MD play you in football they are trying to run up the score? Some of the 2nd stringers on Landon and MD I suspect are pretty good.

As for your comment about STA football. Since GP has left the IAC after the 2004 Football season. Landon has won 3 IAC Football Banners

Landon won the IAC title in 2004 (Prep was still in the league that season)
Landon won the IAC in 2005
Episcopal won the IAC in 2006
St. Albans won the IAC in 2007
Landon won the IAC in 2008
St. Albans won the IAC in 2009

Looks like Landon was won more IAC football banners this decade than STA. As for Prep being kicked out of the IAC for football, thats a whole different story. Prep study body is nearly double of EHS, St. Stephens and Bullis now a days. On top of that, these schools are all CO-ED. These schools historically have never been able to compete with GP.

18:31 here. I'm not complaining about anything, and couldn't care less about 12 year olds playing football; just noting that STA beat Landon in football two out of last three years but that neither compete well with Prep. The word on the street is that Landon fears more lacrosse losses to Prep and is agitating to chuck 'em out of the IAC for lacrosse too . . .

You have know idea what you are talking about. The Landon - GP football game this past fall came down to the final 2 mins of the game. GP ended up winning by 5 points. Landon QB threw a pick on the goaline. Landon was winning heading into the 4th Q against Prep. Landon was upset by STA this past Fall.

Yes you are correct STA haswon 2 out of the 3 last IAC Football Championships. Landon has won 3 out of the past 6 IAC Football banners. Whats your point.

As for your comment about lacrosse, you couldn't be more further from the truth. Why would Landon want GP out of the IAC for lacrosse. Landon has won the IAC lacrosse title the past 3 years in a row. In 2008 the Bears won the title outright, in 2009 (Landon and GP both split the title) and this past spring Landon and GP split the title again). The past two seasons Landon and GP have gone 2 -2 against one another.

Ironically, Landon has a very poor athletic program. Actually, unless a boy arrives at Landon with strong athletic skills in all likelihood he will not develop any new or additional athletic abilities while he is a student at the school.

Team sports practices are only for about an hour at the end of each school day. For many boys these practices are a complete waste of time. These practices only serve to shorten the academic school day and there is not enough time available for anything that faintly resembles a quality team practice.

Because team sport practice sessions are so short, for the most part after a few stretching exercises the coaches and the starting teams just practice plays that will be used in their next game. The rest of the boys just stand on the sidelines for the rest of the practice session.

There is very little time allowed for conditioning, drills, or skills training. Don't get me wrong this is enough if your DS is on the starting team, but if DS is not a starter he will hardly get any exercise at all. It’s fine to play your best players during games and to do everything in your power to win, but this logic should not serve to exclude boys with less talent from even participating in practices. Team sports are part of Landon’s school day (P.E.) and as such they are part of its tuition, yet many boys are left out and flat out ignored by the coaches. They’ll take your money, but they won’t even let you practice???

No wonder why bullying and poor sportsmanship are rampant at Landon.

Just like so many other lies Landon has harbored through these many years, it is not even a good school for physical fitness conditioning, learning teamwork and sportsmanship, or acquiring athletic skills.

To Clown who posted this:

I assume you are some father at Landon or some clueless parent who thinks Johnny Boy should be an All star and get more playing time.
Anyone who has coached youth sports before, recognizes boys with natural talent and those who work their hardest to improve their game. Not every kid who goes to Landon, Mater Dei or Prep is an athletic super star. Coaching can only a boy so far its what the boy does after practice on his own time. Kids will never become the athletes they want to become if they just think an hour of practice will develop them into stars.

The last time I checked, Landon MS athletics are pretty solid. They seem to beat every local school they play except for Mater Dei. Mater Dei has a different athletic philosophy than Landon, STA and Bullis. MD is clearly the best athletic school in the area for sports at the MS level. Disregard that Mater Dei has a lot of boys who turn 15 in 8th grade, MD has a much longer sports practice than most MS teams do in the area.

Landon MS sports practices typically run from 2:30 to 3:45ish depending on who the coach is.

Why don't you give an example of poor sportsmanship at Landon. I guess Landon is the only school in the area that has bullies.

Whether your son is a starter on the football field or is a bench-warmer, the life lessons boys through competitive team sports are invaluable.

Strengthening Our School – Six Initiatives

1. Disciplinary System Initiative – To ensure we live up to the principles of our Code of Character, we have restructured the Upper School disciplinary process. Our goal is help boys clearly understand what is expected of them and to hold them accountable. We want to be fair and consistent in the administration of our policies and to develop a positive school culture founded on responsibility and trust. The process for addressing Honor Code violations has been in place; a new system is now in place to deal with infractions against the Civility Code and other School Rules. The Upper School Dean of Student Discipline (Harry Murphy) and a Disciplinary Committee will be supported by the Dean of Student Life (David Smith) and two Form Advisors (James Foreman and Andy Katz).

2. Faculty/Staff Accountability Initiative – To clarify expectations for the behavior of Landon personnel and to hold faculty and staff accountable, a three-step plan is now in place. Division Heads have met with any faculty members whose past performance has not met School standards. Second, during Orientation, teachers will meet to review standards, establish clear guidelines and discuss the consequences of non-compliance. Third, a committee of faculty and administrators will fully implement evaluation programs already in place and monitor progress. The Assistant Head of Upper School (Hans Farnstrom) will focus on faculty accountability and improvement. Division Heads (Chris Robertson and Doug Norry) will do so in Lower and Middle School. CFO/COO Tim Harrison and Registrar Lisa Goenner lead the staff process.

3. Athletics Initiative – To be certain Landon’s athletics program is supporting the broader mission of the School and adhering to our Code of Character, Neil Phillips and Ed Sundt will oversee a comprehensive Athletic Department external review. They will also head a national search for a new Athletic Director. An outside consultant will assess policies and delivery of the athletics program in all divisions. He/she will also look at the place of athletics in school life. Among our goals are a recommitment to the teacher-coach-mentor model and strict adherence to the principles of positive coaching. Michael Derwinski has been named Acting Athletic Director; Paul Padalino is Acting Associate Athletic Director.

We can only assume that this Landon Coach didn't get the memo.

Well, let this be your first knowledge--the effort to kick Prep out of the IAC is ongoing, and led by Landon. No need to come back on here and apologize when it becomes public, lol. The irony is that Landon, which has double the number of boys as Bullis, is crying foul because Prep has more boys than Landon. Landon wants to have the most boys of all IAC schools and go back to chalking up those lacrosse titles. They know the way the wind is blowing--hasn't Prep won something like 8 out of the last 10 lax games against Landon?

Thanks for the insight Mr. Georgetown Prep booster. I highly doubt Landon is leading the charge in kicking GP out of the IAC in all sports. Landon and GP appear to be very competitive in a lot of sports. Are you a Prep board member or an administrator? I hope you have some sources to back up your accusations, but then again this is an anonymous forum.

Prep is by far the largest school in the IAC in terms of its upper school. Landon and St. Albans I believe are pretty close in numbers when it comes upper school enrollment.

My sons play baseball at Landon so I dont know the overall record between Landon and GP when it comes to lacrosse. I assume Landon has the advantage in that sport.

Like I said, Landon daddy, you heard it here first. Check with the lax dads (will they be at Hooters with the Landon baseball team crowd?) re: the recent Prep/Landon head to head results. Once Landon gets Prep kicked out, they'll have the highest boys' enrollment in the IAC. And I am sure they will win more banners in their top sport: the freshman fantasy sex league.

PP - you must be pretty bored with your life to be taking shots at HS freshman at Landon.

I'm not a Landon parent or an alum of the school, but hasn't Landon won the past 3 consecutive lacrosse titles.

Time will tell -- Landon wants Prep out of the conference and is working on making it a reality.

Honestly, get a life. Sure the freshmen boys made a mistake but they went through their punishments and my guess is that they have learned and moved on. Be shameful for bringing it up again for no reason. Some of these DCUM parents are so classless.

I think Prep wants out of the IAC but in reality has no place to go. The natural fit for GP would to join the WCAC, but many of the Catholic schools do not want GP in the WCAC, especially the co-ed schools. (GC, St. Johns, O'Connell, Ireton, and Paul VI) Prep is the only school in the IAC that has the facilities to increase their upper school enrollment and I assume they will continue to add more students into its doors. I have heard from several sources, that Father George, wanted GP to join the WCAC. Now that he is gone (and yes father George was forced out of Prep) it will be interesting to see what GP's new headmaster does. I think GP is at the tipping point when it comes to their enrollment. The last I heard they have an incoming freshman class around 120 - 125 boys, Preps upper school enrollment is over 480 students and getting closer and closer to 500 boys. I have know idea what Landon's and STA's incoming freshman numbers are but I expect they fall somewhere in the mid 80's.

Prep already has a higher male enrollment than St. Johns, GC, Ireton, PVI and O'Connell. No wonder the co-ed schools in the Catholic league don't want another member to come in that has a high male enrollment. The co-ed schools in the WCAC have been complaining for years about DeMatha (over 900 boys) and Gonzaga ( over 900 boys) and their dominance in athletics over the years.

If Prep continues to grow in its numbers, than yes, they should look to join another league. I'm sure GP is looking to join the Catholic league but who knows if they will let them in this time. I really don't see how the co-ed schools: Bullis, St. Stephens or Episcopal can keep up with GP in athletics, when they only have around 200 boys in their upper schools.

Landon has 92 boys coming in for the Freshman class.

Incorrect use of "shameful"--the word "ashamed" is what you are looking for. Sentence with correct usage for "shameful": "The behavior of the Landon JV lacrosse players in forming a fantasy sex league was shameful. One hopes the boys involved are ashamed of what they did. Perhaps the publicity will shame the school into examining its misogynistic culture."

So do they have bat 350-360 boys in upper school, or is this a new trend to increase enrollment? That's a big disparity compared to the co-Ed schools in the IAC.
