This is tough. My kids are 9 and 7, so they line up that they are both the oldest in their group every other year. We’re in our “development year” of the cycle, so I am excited to have my Saturdays free, and just relax and have fun this season working the concessions and timing. I love Friday morning breakfasts and having coffee with my friends the other days. I am also thankful that the older one is swimming 50s, so they can’t compare times. I have 2-3 years until we face the reality that the younger one may be a faster swimmer - not age adjusted, but flat out faster than his older brother.
I have a 9 and 8 (my 9 is 9 for summer swim, turns 10 in August so they're actually 18 months my two older kids) and last summer, my oldest consistently beat his younger brother. They both decided to do year round swim at a low key club, and there was a bit of drama when my 8yo got invited to the 9 and under relay but my 9yo did not. He's slowly coming to terms that his younger brother is a stronger swimmer than him, but it's been a rough realization for him.
