Why Does MCPS Enroll Kids in CES from Schools that Have ELC

Anonymous
ELC is not CES.

Duh.

The whole program seems like a joke.

to weed out PARENTS. They send kids with THOSE kinda parents off to a CES. If you feel your child deserves to go to a CES, hire an attorney, review the data to find out why your kid is not going. ELC at home school is not comparable.

Our ELC is bad because of the teacher. Doesn’t correct grammar or make substantive suggestions and relies on students to correct each others’ work. CES is at a school I would not want my kid to go to. So—as always—we are doing our own thing.

They should be targeting kids at schools that don't offer ELC. As a result, we'll lose kids from our school and therefore staff if we have a lower student population and with cuts you betcha we'll be cut staff. Unreal

I don’t understand this ELC for ALL model. That defeats the point of having ELC. If they want different books and even novel studies in the on level classes then include that. But ELC for ALL is the same as Honors for ALL is MS, pointless.

The entire point of waiting until 4th/5th grade for enrolling kids in ELC or compacted math is because at that point you can tell if students really need vastly different instruction vs they are just young and learning basic that click at different times for everyone but usually by 3rd.

OP here--I know. and the fact that our CES school has low enrollment so they're desperately trying to recruit kids (of certain demographics). It's so obvious.

I know and it's so hard to recruit certain demographics for a race-blind process too!

That is BS that it is race-blind just as another BS that teachers don't have any say in it. Teachers may not be writing a recommendation for a child, but schools and "central where the decisions occurs" coordinate.

That should be on MCPS banner: enroll your kid in the largest school district in MD but be prepared to teach them eveything

I'm just questioning the value of it if you're able to get enrichment through your home school. Also it seems weird that the staff at my home school are basically encouraging kids to go to the CES when wouldn't that drive down their own staff needs? Maybe they do want to get rid of the parents more than the kids...

It's always about the parents. For ex., when making class roster they try not to lump "those kinda" parents all in one class.

ES has ELC. They received a pullout ONCE in semester. it is another genius idea of MCPS to create ELCs at home schools. Honors for All. ELC for All. AP tests free for All.

SAT and AP tests free for all is great. How could you have a problem with that? You don’t want kids in low income families to go to college?

Unless the kid is interested in putting in the effort to prep for the AP/IB exam, it is a waste for MCPS to pre-pay for the test since the kids have zero skin in the game. Many of these kids are sleeping through the test or having their arms twisted to take the test.

Low-income kids who need help paying for the tests have always been able to get waivers. Paying for AP/IB tests for all is a waste of taxpayer dollars.

What do you mean ELC for all? My DD had to be selected and invited to ELC based on her MAP-R scores. Kids who are not in ELC leave the classroom and kids from other classes come into my DD's class for ELC. Are some schools doing ELC across the board with no criteria and separation of students?

Have you seen some of the AP classes? Some have wonderful teachers. Others self study to get a decent score in class and if they take test. Just by making exam free doesn't mean students will do well in class or even take the test and do well on test.

Search the other threads about ELC and CES. In a nutshell, schools do things differently for students who have met "MCPS criteria".

CES is the same. It works because the kids motivate each other.

Yes, CES is about the cohort of more motivated kids.
