Salon services - tipping

Anonymous
There must be hair people posting on this thread. Why in the world would an owner, who sets her contract price, be tipped?

For our wedding, the planner said it’s not necessary to tip the owners of any of the services (makeup/hair, photographer, DJ, florist), but tip the assistants.

+1
I would not tip.

If they expect or need a tip, why not just charge 120% of the original price they are asking for?
Anonymous
I wouldn’t tip if she’s charging $1000.

If you are that annoyed, perhaps you can't afford salon color.

NP. Or, perhaps you’re an a$$. I could afford to pay to have my hair colored everyday of the week, if I want. That doesn’t mean I waste money. The price for color and cut is absurd. The product cost is minimal, so I’m paying somebody $150-300 in labor for a job that didn’t even require a degree? lol. Stupid.

You are a special kind of witch, aren't you? I guess you can't do your own hair... with your degrees... so you're kind of at the mercy of those stupid, uneducated, ignorant, a-monkey-could-do-it stylists, aren't ya!?

+1. I understand tipping the assistants but not the business owners.

OP here- Actually, I would like to hear from HUMAs (Hair and make-up artists) who are freelancing/self-employed: Do you pretty much expect a 20% tip, and if yes, why not charge 120% from the get-go?

Powerful comeback. You’ve hurt my feelings. Lol.

It’s basic logic. The stylists charge way too much for their services. Break it down by labor and supplies, and that’s obvious. No different than a plumber, landscaper, etc. You look at what they’re actually charging for the labor, and for hairstyling, it’s insane.

And yes, I can do my own hair. Hairstylist can’t be too stupid, they’ve figured out how to con people out of money while also tipping them 20 percent.

They already charge the 120% and pushovers STILL pay a 20% tip on top of that. In fact that’s what happens and of course they will still accept the tip.

Then don't engage a stylist if you feel like they overcharge. It's that simple.

OK, so why does the owner not include the "tip" in the contract that was signed?

Also, the logic that if I can afford to pay 1K, then I can afford to tip 200.00 on top of it, is silly.
Obviously, I would tip assistants if they came along.

Then you should ask the owner what is customary.

How many hours do you have her booked for?

You think "a degree" is the measure of how much you should have to pay someone for a job that takes skill? Ok, lol. But it's your thinking here that is "absurd" -- not how much a color and cut cost. If you think it is that simple, head on over to a beauty school and have your hair done there for a nominal price -- we'll see how that goes.

And there’s not much they can do that’s beyond doing what they’re paid to do. I love to tip when someone is exceptional in some way but that’s rarely the case for a hair appointment.

So you can be magnanimous? Lol.
