For a wedding, we have a makeup artist come to the venue; she is self-employed, charges for travel, parking etc. For the bride and 3 bridesmaids, the charge is close to 1K.
I was brought up that you don't tip the business owner, who sets her own prices, but apparently that concept is passe. The general wisdom seems to be to tip 20% regardless. If I don't tip 20% is it: Bad Really Bad, or OK? |
| What are you planning on tipping? Or are you not tipping at all? |
|
Yes, it is "bad" if you don't tip 20%.
You already know this, though, don't you. You just want a bunch of people on here to tell you it is fine to tip less than that -- which they will. It's not. If you can afford to hire a MUA for a bride and three bridesmaids (and around $1000 is reasonable for that), you can afford to tip $200. |
| A %10 tip is fine unless the work is extraordinary. |
| I'm confused about topping when a different person does color and blowdry and shampooing. It's already so expensive I am annoyed by the idea of having pay more on top of that. |
If you are that annoyed, perhaps you can't afford salon color. |
| Are they bringing an assistant? even if you don't tip the owner, the assistant should get a tip. |
NP. Or, perhaps you’re an a$$. I could afford to pay to have my hair colored everyday of the week, if I want. That doesn’t mean I waste money. The price for color and cut is absurd. The product cost is minimal, so I’m paying somebody $150-300 in labor for a job that didn’t even require a degree? lol. Stupid. |
| I got my hair done today from a salon owner and it $300 plus $50 for hair product that I like. I was annoyed that the suggested tip included the hair product I bought. I ended up tipping only on the service but it annoys me. Also why am I tipping the salon owner? She sets the price and it is just her (it iso be of those salon lofts). |
| Yes, you always took for services. Even if it is the owner. Also, someone that is a small business that is coming to you is not the same set up as your beauty parlor. |
Tip. |
No. |
|
OP here.
OK, so why does the owner not include the "tip" in the contract that was signed? Also, the logic that if I can afford to pay 1K, then I can afford to tip 200.00 on top of it, is silly. Obviously, I would tip assistants if they came along. |
DP but the reason someone else washes our hair is so the more expensive employees can make more money providing more expensive services on that time. Why is the burden on the client to pay those people to support that system? |
And there’s not much they can do that’s beyond doing what they’re paid to do. I love to tip when someone is exceptional in some way but that’s rarely the case for a hair appointment. |
