PP here . DD is just starting 6th grade AAP . . Would like to know the resources for preparing SOL, since this is her first AAP class skipping sixth grade (took 5th grade sol last year) and going to attend 7th grade SOL is a bit challenging. So your suggestions are going to help us a lot .

This. The whole school year is essentially prep for the SOL.

I think your approach is misguided since you’re focused solely on prepping for 7th SOL. The SOL is testing knowledge so that she can build on that knowledge with future math teachings. I’d ask her teacher what she needs to do to catch up and focus on filling any holes from skipping a year.

I have no advice on SOL prep bc my son didn’t do any outside of what the teachers taught in class.

The only prep your child needs is doing well in their math class.

So the AAP classroom is enough to get high scores in SOL ?. Since this is our first year in AAP we are unaware of the intensity of the teaching . In gen ed it greatly depends on the teacher. My 4th grade teacher did great but my 5th grade wasn’t . Also I see threads here where they have mentioned the kids have struggled in acing the SOL .

The SOL is supposed to show what your child has learned, so prepping for it defeats the purpose. Kids don't need to "ace" the SOL.

Your child may struggle if they test into 7th grade algebra by prepping for the SOL without actually having mastered the subject. They'd be better off building a stronger math foundation.

It’s the 2nd day of the school year. Ask your teacher.

Your child skipped a year of math. You should focus on the content that was missed that year.

High scores on SOL depend on your child’s knowledge base, the teacher, AND ability to grasp and learn the concepts being taught. As I’m sure you know, two students in the same classroom, learning the same material, can score vastly different on testing.

I don’t know why always in DCUM some ppl are against prepping . I know in other threads many ppl are saying they are prepping . So it’s always prepped kids vs non prepped . If you are against prepping I get it you kids are “Gifted” . Have you seen the CoGAT and NNAT scores of 2024 many are 150/160 do you think all of that are not prepped . Are you kidding ? Please ignore these threads or atleast don’t reply . If a parent wants to prep it’s their own choice .

Okay. But "prepping" or studying for the SOL? They literally learn that in class all year long. That's what the math part of the day is for.

DP: sure, but I think the point here is that 7th grade algebra is for kids that are very strong in math and need that level of acceleration. If you have to prep significantly to get the SOL score required to do so, PPs are just suggesting that perhaps algebra in 7th isn’t the most appropriate path for that student. It doesn’t mean that student isn’t good at math, it just means that they don’t need to accelerate that much.

Students are in the AAP class because they are supposed to be able to handle the acceleration in math. The class is taught at a pace that many kids have had success. Not every child in AAP is actually ready for that math acceleration, there are kids in AAP that are stronger in math, They might not pass advanced on the SOL and that is fine. My kids 6th grade Advanced Math class, kids selected based on past SOL scores and iReady scores, traditionally has a 60% pass advanced rate and a 100% pass rate. I think is pretty amazing given that the kids are taking 7th grade math as 6th graders. We are not at a high prep school, there were very few kids doing any type of math enrichment in DS class. So yes, you can pass advanced by just taking the class.

There is something to be said to letting your kid be who they are. If they are not able to pass advanced on the SOL then they take Algebra 1 in 8th grade and there is nothing wrong with that. Let your kid be who they are.

Ok . Relax ! I just wanna know if there are any new resources just like SOl pass where they have the opportunity to practice test pattern . I know Mathnesium and other learning centers are offering sol revision . I’m looking for practice resources.

This. My kids are not gifted, nor have they "prepped." I would not want them to test into levels they can't naturally grasp on their own. If other parents believe differently, they're obviously welcome to go whatever route they choose.
