You think chicks don't talk about getting dudes? Step off your high horse. |
Maybe if OP's kid is applying to W&L as a pipe dream then this would work as a more realistic option. There are some cultural similarities between the two schools. But if he's a legitimate W&L hopeful, Roanoke would be at most an extreme safety and probably below his radar altogether. |

Approximately half of all DCUM threads end up in the toilet, and this is one of them. I know a bunch of kids currently at W&L, and they are definitely not douchy bros. The school is pretty white, though.
A somewhat similar school would be Davidson, not Roanoke. |
It checks the outdoorsy boxes and could work on a cultural basis if OP's kid is truly a Tims-wearing granola cruncher. But I'd worry about the academics and whether they'd be challenging enough for a kid with the stats for W&L, not to mention the career prospects. Goldman definitely doesn't swing on down to Boone after it makes its yearly recruiting trip to W&L. |
| Whoever suggested App State, Warren Wilson, and/or UNC-Asheville doesn't have a clue about W&L. |
Isn't the correct terminology "dudes" and "dudettes" ? |
| W and L has the most active outdoors club of any college. The kids I know there are not douchy and are outdoorsy. I would suggest a visit op, because this thread is based mostly on stereotypes and not actual knowledge. |
Look at Davidson. It is a top med and law and career feeder too but without all preppy vibe, and tons of outdoor culture. A notch better than W&L, overall. |

Agree. There are a lot of pathetic posters that know nothing about the subject but post negatively because it feels good. I question any adult who would refer to young adults or kids as "preppy, douchey, bro's" for a dopamine hit. Starting to think this board is filled with a bunch of pent up day-drinking house wives that secretly long for that kind of guy vs. the mate they chose in life. |
+1. The overlap schools are Davidson, Colgate, Bucknell with Duke as a reach and Furman/Sewanee as safeties |
Stop being such #$%$@ snobs. App State and others listed are perfectly fine schools where kids can shine. |
Sure, but they aren't overlaps with W&L |
OP: "wants to study environmental science, geoscience, etc" What about this says they long to live their life at Goldman? |

OP, I would suggest William & Mary as an alternative to W&L. It’s public but has the feeling of a SLAC. W&M may be a better fit culturally and there are plenty of outdoor activities in the area, including a small lake on campus. The geology program is well-regarded (and you can even choose a concentration in environmental geology).
https://www.wm.edu/majorsminors/geology/ St. Mary’s College of Maryland might be a nice safety worth exploring. Lots of outdoor activities, including on the water. Has a strong environmental studies program. https://www.smcm.edu/environmentalstudies/ |
