Washington and Lee

I haven't heard much about this one. I know it is Greek heavy, but would it be worth checking out for an outdoorsy non-preppy kid who loves the Shenandoah valley /appalachian landscape and wants to study environmental science, geoscience, etc at a SLAC/small university? We are not in VA, but W&L is closer for us than schools in the northeast

W&L is fantastic if you can get in. The Greek scene dominates, and males pretty much have to pledge a frat to have a social life and get chicks, but there's a house for everyone, even those who don't fit into the stereotypical Southern frat bro mold. The alumni network is a gold mine. Tons of finance grads end up on The Street. Med schools and law schools know W&L, respect it and gobble up its grads. There's really nothing negative to say about the school.

The OP is not posting about a kid whose main focus is to "end up on The Street." (Nor can we assume his approach to dating is as unnuanced as just maximizing his chances to "get chicks.) However, you have inadvertently given a great encapsulation of what sort of people this school might appeal to.

Based on kids attending from our DMV private-all preppy, country club members and sporty, douchey types that want to study business.

No, super preppy, most people are involved in Greek life. Definitely not the best fit.

Instead, I would try JMU in Virginia, and in NC, especially Warren Wilson College (very environmentally focused) and UNC-Asheville.

A kid who has the stuff for W&L would be bored to tears academically at these schools. You and the last couple of PPs are way off about the nature of the Greek scene at W&L. It's not a monolith like at Alabama or Ole Miss. There is absolutely a house for the OP's kid. And to respond to the earlier PP, he's an 18 year old male, unless he rolls the other way then yes, he wants to get chicks in college.

Also: W&L has a VERY robust Outdoors Club that hikes every weekend. Not true everyone is in a frat. Those other schools are not anywhere near the caliber of W&L.

If interested in W&L, but want to escape mandatory Greek social life, then consider Davidson College, Middlebury College, and Williams College.

Isn't Middlebury a lot woker than W&L? I'm thinking of the Charles Murray incident.

How about Roanoke College?

And I suppose if he's like you, he might be gauche enough to use that language in public, caring nothing about the feelings of women (not chicks) who feel that they're more than a prize to be "gotten."

Someone considering W&L would have JMU and UNC Asheville as safeties assuming they were ok with school size. Warren Wilson College would be so far below even a safety that no kid considering W&L would ever even know it exists
