Then in a one month period she went from "really pushing myself to make the 5 mile mark!" to "I average 10 miles per day, with an average pace of 7:30." She's an overweight Marijuana enthusiast of nearly 50 who's been running maybe 6 weeks? Is this real? If so, those times suggest that she could easily train to become an elite runner. I just can't figure out what the motivation would be to lie though. Is this something people lie about?

Ask to go for a run with her.

lol +1

+1000. Even better, ask her to go run 10 miles, but only ask her the day before. That’ll shut her up real fast.

For me, I don’t want any of what I am doing on social media. I have a Strava account but very much limit that to a narrow selection of friends that seem to like to encourage each other. I really prefer to be left alone. I will let the race results speak for themselves, and even with those, I’m competing with myself anyways.

For sure people lie about this stuff.

Why would you do this, unless you are a hateful person? For some kind of fun gotcha?

I’d just be curious to see if she’s lying. I personally wouldn’t want to maintain a relationship with someone who lies like that. But that’s just me.

She could def be lying and people do lie about it but also some people are just more naturally athletic.

My husband drives me up the wall. He goes for a run like, maybe once a month at best and does not exercise hardly at all. I exercise 4-6 times a week rotating between strength and cardio and run very regularly, every week. Long slow runs, short fast runs etc etc. I've been in great shape and maintaining this for like 3 years after losing 50 pounds. He was a high school/college athlete.

When we run the 10k we do every summer he will, per usual, smoke me. He can get 'in shape' in 2/3 weeks. He just will run a few times and suddenly be able to run a 10k! I had to train for MONTHS to be able to do that and if I let up on my routine I lose it quickly.

So just to say some people ARE naturally athletic and can ramp up faster than others.

OP you sound jealous. Really, it's just not a good look.

I think the predicate question is why would this person make up such outlandish claims in the first instance. Lying is a major character flaw. Sometimes people need to be smacked in the nose like a dog with a newspaper. They are better for it and maybe the behavior will stop.

I'm sure you are a perfect person that does nothing wrong. Did you just seriously just compare a person to a dog? OP, people lie all the time. Maybe, in this instance, try to approach with compassion or indifference. How in the world does this impact you? Why are you letting this bother you? These are more important questions.

Not that this is lying, but my favorite is the before and after weight loss journey pics. The before pic is always in horrible unsupportive bra and huge granny panties, pushing the stomach out, not smiling and generally looking miserable. After pic is make up on, hair done, push up bra, bikini underwear, flexing and sucking in the stomach.

Valid point, but keep in mind a lot of overweight people avoid cameras and don't bother trying to look good. Granny panties for comfort may be all they wear. They wouldn't have a comparable before pic.

Some of us aren’t compatible with liars. Why are you bothered by this?

Sounds like there are a number of chronic liars/embelleshers in this thread.

OP here. You're responding to someone else. I posted the question and am just taking in the answers. But that pp is right. I'm curious why someone would lie about this. And I'm not entirely sure that she's lying, tbh. It's possible, like a pp suggested, she is naturally an elite runner that missed her calling until late in life.

IDK I guess I just would rather take someone at face value than assume the worst.
When I used to run my 5k time never broke the 29 min mark. I was a slow runner.
A colleague came of maternity leave, had never run before, started running, first 5k was 33 minutes, second 5k was 27 minutes, third 5k was 22 minutes. She just got faster and faster, over like 4 months. When you find a sport that is aligned with your body mechanics, progress can happen quickly.

Wow! You should publicly congratulate her on her excellent progress! Let her and all of her friends know how talented she is!

She doesn’t even realize how ridiculous she sounds.

No 50 year old pot smoker is going to be able to do this. Zero.

Can you check her Strava or add her on Garmin/Fitbit/Apple? She must track her runs somehow.
