Pitt v Rochester?

City of Pittsburgh >>>>> City of Rochester

Pitt has tons of school spirit. All of Oakland gets into the sports, with H2P signs everywhere. It’s Pittsburgh, don’t forget, where sports are revered. Pitt definitely wins the D1 vibe contest.
I’d say “isn’t UR much better ranked?” except UR took quite a tumble in ranking recently (similar to W&M), so their rankings are similar.

Reputation is subjective.

But, if the vast majority have the same subjective opinion, then ...

We get lots of “huh, never heard of it” when DD says she’s going to UR. Honestly I knew nothing about it until we started the kids’ college search.

Did he consider Syracuse? I found it about the exact combination of UR & Pitt

^ this - I’ve never met a Syracuse kid who didn’t luv the school and their experience. Not the ivy league for sure, but the kids I know are all gainfully employed with great jobs. Big NYC contingent with alumns actually do help

I would say ‘Cuse > Pitt > Richmond if my kid was OPs

Anonymous wrote:OP again - to PP, great insight and I personally have a bias for the private experience, and Rochester seems great size and type of kids. My DC was actually recruited D3 athlete who had slot offer at Middlebury, but backed out after overnite in the fall. Hesitate to even bring that up as DCUM will crush him for that, but he really felt that the SLAC athletes were not his peeps. Rochester and Pitt kids and culture seemed more his speed

Could you share the sport? My child (junior) is currently being recruited by Middlebury and I am curious as to what turned off your son on the overnight?

I won’t share the sport - what I will say is that 2 of my kid’s closest friends are high level D1 recruits, and his circle is an extremely athletic, middle class and humble group, despite the significant athletic prowess. Let’s just say humble and balanced weren’t the characteristics he experienced during the overnite. Was a huge turnoff for my kid

1. Rochester not Richmond, PP

2. Rude to suggest a new school to a senior in April. Too late.

I went to the U of R and my son goes to Pitt. The U of R is great and good for economics. I had a good experience there. But, lots of people have not heard of it or think it is a SUNY. Back when I was there, it had very little school spirit (we occasionally went to basketball games, but it was like going to a high school game). I had really wonderful professors and great classes.

My son loves Pitt and has enjoyed going to basketball games. He has found kids to be friendly and down to earth. Some are partiers, some are not. He has found a good balance with academics. He loves exploring Pittsburgh.

This leans towards Pitt. There’s no getting around UR being a $90k private school and its student pop will reflect that.

My kid needs sunny weather, so they won’t be applying to either. If it were me, though, I’d pick Pitt.

Pittsburgh is one of the least sunny cities in the US. My daughter loves it there, but she does complain about the gray weather occasionally. If someone really wanted sun I could see Pittsburgh being a poor fit.

Rochester gets about 2.5 times the snowfall annually and about 1-2 more sunny days per month compared to Pittsburgh. Weather is a toss up for these schools.
