DC is struggling with this - likely econ major, social and affable kid who liked the feel of UR and campus but also Pitt vibe, location and sports. Job prospects and reputation are pretty similar, correct? Kid will likely be in NYC region post grad.. and he knows about gray winters in Rochester (not that Pitt is in the sunbelt!)
Any thoughts on either vs the other appreciated! |
| OP again - cost not an issue |
| This is a tough one because I would have guessed a kid would have a clear preference after visiting. These two are pretty different in terms of size, D1 sports, truly urban, driving distance to home, private/public. My kid and everyone we know loves Pitt. But if kid had no preference, based solely on my own preference of (well ranked) private over public school, and if $$$$ is not a factor, I've probably have a slight preference for UR. |
| OP again - to PP, great insight and I personally have a bias for the private experience, and Rochester seems great size and type of kids. My DC was actually recruited D3 athlete who had slot offer at Middlebury, but backed out after overnite in the fall. Hesitate to even bring that up as DCUM will crush him for that, but he really felt that the SLAC athletes were not his peeps. Rochester and Pitt kids and culture seemed more his speed |
| Would he be interested in continuing his sport at the club or intramural level? Would one choice offer better opportunities there? |
| yes I’m sorry - he will likely play sport at UR and club at Pitt. But much lower key than NESCAC at both, and neither tip the scales |
| Pitt. School spirit matters |
pls elaborate - this is an urban school, not university of Nebraska |

Former Rochester resident who visited Pitt - I loved Pitt, but the tour guide mentioned gloomy weather a couple of times, so we looked it up. Somehow, Rochester has more sunny days. My kid needs sunny weather, so they won’t be applying to either. If it were me, though, I’d pick Pitt.

Urban doesn’t really change the D1 school spirit |
yes it does |

UR has the better reputation academically, right? Plus, there's the garbage plate, so there is that.

| I honestly think they're both really great. Pitt might be a bit more sporty, but it's not like you're picking Alabama vs. Mt. St. Mary's. They are two good, fairly comparable colleges in fairly comparable towns. |
Why? |
Reputation is subjective. |
