Thoughts on old musicians still performing

The Cher concert over National Harbor that I went to a few years ago actually had several videos of her singing in between actual performances of her singing. I assumed to give her in concert breaks.

It's great when some people do it, and not so great when others do it. I saw Paul McCartney live a few years ago and he was awesome. Bruce Springsteen is awesome. Joey McIntyre of NKOTB does solo shows and he's great. Performers need to tweak their performances to mature them. Madonna wants to see herself as young and that's why she's doing the same things she did in the early 90's.

Saw The Cure last summer at Merriweather Pavilion in and Robert Smith was awesome. He looks different but his voice and the band were phenomenal.

Saw U2 at the Sphere earlier this year and the band looked and sounded great. It was a truly amazing performance.

They seem to be alright in their 60s, but the wheels fall off in their 70s.

They need to switch it up to performing with a backing orchestra. Now that’s true class and age appropriate.

Madonna is an interesting example and she's in a unique bind because unlike other performers who can focus less on dancing, and being provocative as they age, I think she still identifies with and sees herself as a "cutting edge" artist. In her own mind she views changing or mellowing as dying so you see the old style, the showmanship which can border on ridiculous, I agree. Other artists adapt, preserve their instrument (ie voice) and most of all connect with their fans. They know if you are there, you are likely a long term fan and there's a gratitude there and a warmth and connection. Which can make for a great show. Madonna is mostly preoccupied with herself as she as always been. Not surprised she is not capable of being all that flexible and adapting. She's a rigid person. I think some older artists remain soulful and their shows are great.

This makes me think of Pink and how many more years she can fly around the stadiums! I saw her Beautiful Trauma tour years ago, my sister saw her years before me and yet she continues to be at the top of her game. It is being done, time comes for us all but some do still put on great shows post 60. I think you have to adapt and your voice has to be still be good. Not necessarily the same...but still good.

I went to see Paul Simon's farewell tour. It was ok but it took him FOREVER to warm up on stage. It was like "ok grandpa, keep going, you'll get there...!"

I saw John Fogerty last summer. He was amazing!

Ive seen quite a few of these oldsters in recent years and Blondie in her 70s was amazing - saw her at the Anthem - she was the best of the bunch. Willie Nelson's voice still sounds great too but he only plays for like 45 minutes.

I saw Willie a few years ago. Pretty terrible - he doesn’t even pretend to try to keep a beat

Obscure, but I saw Alejandro Escovedo recently. He was amaaazing. Really rocked. 73 years old.

I saw Madonna this year and she sucked. I enjoyed Lionel Richie and Earth Wind and Fire though.

Paul McCartney is a god.

Still.

Many are pretty good still, and tour fairly regularly. Madonna is an absolute disaster and lacks the star power and respect that many older musicians have.

Are we talking about old like Madonna, Morrissey, Elvis Costello - because that isn’t really old to be able to still sing and move. The difference is Madonna thinks she looks the same and can dance the same - she doesn’t understand aging gracefully. Yet Cher still rocks her sequined Bob Mackies and platform heels. And yes, Morrissey can still perform like he did in the 80s, but now wears a suit.

Madonna is disgusting.

When she called out a concert goer for not standing and then realized the person was in a wheel chair , the hag couldn't even apologize.

I used to love her but she's always been trash.
