She is. She's very unhappy about it, but she is getting more proper care and attention than what we could provide

I am so glad she is in memory care! She may adjust. I know several cases where after anywhere from 4 months to over a year, the parent did adjust and seem happy there. It is the best place for her. I am so sorry for what you went through and I say it from the heart because I have an incredibly challenging and outburst prone mom who traumatized my kids and me (and in this case it was a worsening of behavior, not new behavior). I hope you are recuperating from all this and can rest assured she is where she needs to be.

I had to choose sometimes between caring fur my child and my mother.

I decided for example that she would not spend Christmas at her grandmother’s home (which had been our tradition). I thought my child had a right to a calm Christmas morning, rather than walking up in something that resembled a nursing home (not literally).

Good luck with placing her. That is definitely the right decision (and yes, find an age-appropriate explanation for your child).
