Nottingham has been super under enrolled for years.

Amen. They like it that way.

No other middle schools is over capacity.

People are free to transfer.

Nah, they aren’t going to kick the hornets nest unless they have to. The only reason they brought it up last fall is they thought Gunston was going to have a lot of growth. Once the numbers went the other way they dropped the idea immediately.

You are welcome to do an administrative transfer to Williamsburg.

My daughter will be in fifth grade next year and I saw the maps that kept most of her school at hamm, which would be great for her socially. The maps that don’t move immersion aren’t as good (and honestly look a little screwy), so I’m curious if anyone has any insight.

I don’t think anyone knows. APS just revised the boundary policy that now prioritizes alignment and walkability over other concerns. So that should keep neighborhoods happy. But for boundary changes to actually happen, APS could wait till Arlington Tech fully opens to solve the worsening enrollment imbalances among the schools. I’ve previously commented on the pros/cons of other commenters’ ideas here like moving all of Lyon Village to Yorktown to solve an alignment issue or sending Boulevard Manor to Swanson for similar reasons, etc. But these are all just pie in the sky ideas that probably no one except people on here are discussing or considering.

Are there new documents? I thought this was tabled for a long time?
They cancelled the Nottingham "swing space".

They discovered that Gunston was overcrowded by 100 students who were not even FROM APS.

We need to double down on residency checking in every freaking grade before entering another boundary Thunderdome(tm).

So much this. Please write a short letter to Engage demanding more frequent thorough residency checks. It will help us with everything from the budget to boundaries, if we get students, who should not be in APS, out. Huge decisions with boundaries were nearly made due to students who were not supposed to be here. Can’t even imagine how many 100s are not supposed to be here at the HS level. And the expenditures per student are so high, that they will make cuts that affect every student.

How are Swanson and Hamm? Which is the preferred pyramid?

They are both well-regarded schools with good principals at both. Hamm has the newer building with state-of-the-art STEAM labs and other spaces. I don’t think one is better than the other, unless you like new facilities.

Right before COVID my friend tried to transfer their child to Williamsburg and was told no.

I'm sure you'd find that solution equally helpful if Gunston were the vastly under-enrolled school and Williamsburg at/above capacity.

Again. No school is above capacity.

Williamsburg and Hamm are accepting transfers, which will hopefully help balance enrollment. I know many applying to Hamm who are zoned for Swanson.

And all of Halls Hill has a guaranteed transfer to Hamm from Swanson.

Several of these school are right at capacity, which effectively means too crowded on the ground and the experience a kid is having going to them is not ideal and of course enrollment is right near the tipping point where there could be an issue and there is zero wiggle room. But it's good policy to ignore this just because you like where your kid goes to school?

Swanson at least still has trailers too. Williamsburg should not sit severely underenrolled while Swanson kids are in trailers.

Deflective statement.

At the elementary level, Drew has been underenrolled since Montessori moved out with no signs of that ever changing. APS is fine with letting a school be underenrolled if people aren't yelling about it.
