Hazing at U-M Frats

After that week, anyone that was not White was specifically pulled and questioned as to why they were there, who they came with, etc. White, non-frat kids didn't have that issue.

The one non-white kid that eventually decided to pledge was crying in his room several days during the pledge process because of what he considered extra hazing (may or not have been extra; maybe all pledges cry) and racist comments.

And to think all these kids had resumes filled with 100+ hours of service work and other pretend activities that portrayed them as paragons of virtue.. sad.

think some freshman were hospitalized recently for severe alcohol poisoning, dehydration, and frostbite. They make pledges do weird stuff outside in sub-arctic temperatures while being drunk.

School tries really hard to keep it on the down low. If people knew it was really going on at the school they would never send their kids there.

+1 for Michigan.
1. They get pledges drunk and drop them off far from campus with no phone or money and they need to find a way home.

2. Weird axe throwing shit when drunk

3. Think there’s still some naked stuff they do

Wow! And who do kids with common sense put up with this? Why do parents that know this is happening allow this?

And yes it happens at Michigan. Confirmed.

I agree but every year parents act so surprised. That is my point.

Every year people send their kids off to college for the first time with no point of reference that this stuff actually happens and goes way beyond anything they could imagine. It won’t stop until the freshmen classes say enough and report any and all forms of hazing and the colleges stop turning a blind eye to it.

What? Michigan acceptance rate is super high. If you are a Michigan resident it is not that difficult to attend the school. Look at how low the 25% SAT quartile number is. Plus the sheer number of TO's. That's why Michigan has an outsized number of less academically inclined, frat-bros than something like UVA.

You are talking like no one from the top quartile or half join frats. Also, TO is a recent phenomenon. This sh*t has been going on for years.

Relentless pressure to do cocaine and binge drink until blackout. Freshmen sorority girls are peer pressured and coerced to sleep with fraternity boys at the specific houses the older bigs want to remain socially close with. Ghislaine Maxwell vibes. Very gross. Don't let your teen go to Michigan undergrad you care about them.

If your kid is interested in Greek life, then maybe don't send them there.

But I was there decades ago and had no contact with Greek life. It wasn't for me at all and had a great experience. I'm comfortable sending my kids. They also are interested in other aspects of UM.

Which houses?

The cocaine stories are everywhere.

Don't believe all the hazing rumors you hear, regardless of the school. 99% of them are embellished, if not totally made up, by jealous geeds.

I don’t as in a Greek house at a private t20 in the 90s. Can’t recall seeing any hazing.

I do think this is a large Public Flagship, kind of thing

Michigan state

Or university of Michigan

???

Why aren’t these entities that are clearly engaging in criminal conduct prosecuted under the law? The behavior would be considered unlawful under any other circumstance. Why do we allow colleges to shield this activity behind Greek letters?

Is it all smoke and mirrors?

Rank is irrelevant. DS played a sport at Yale; wasn't Greek but had lots of friends who were and lived near a bunch of frats his senior year. Says he saw plenty of hazing behavior-- naked runs in winter, forced drinking, etc. And then there are the societies; he says his did some mild "joke" hazing but some did more serious things. Maybe it's changed since covid, but was absolutely happening when DS graduated in 2018.

Frankly it didn't surprise me; I was much nerdier so I didn't run in those circles, but I assume it was also happening at my T15 back in the day. Smart kids are still kids, and kids do dumb stuff.
