Hazing at U-M Frats

Me too. I would think these organizations would be shut down by now or closed due to lack of interest. It’s 2024, inclusion is in , not exclusion and humiliation. I can’t think of what these people go through during hazing. And then go to class the next day and supposedly able to concentrate on their classes.

+1 this is a college for higher education, not the military training for the Navy Seals.

I hate the greek system.

It amazes me how many DCUM posters are apparently "surprised" or "appalled" by the Greek system.

The only thing surprising to me is how many fraternities and sororities still manage to get caught with some of the more extreme hazing rituals considering there is heightened scrutiny.

I assume the Greek system will continue basically forever, for the same reason athletics (although, athletics is less controversial, though still stirs up a lot of people on DCUM) will continue forever.

I gather Greek grads probably are more financial successful in life vs. non-Greek because they use that Greek network. Those alums probably give more $$$s back to the university and actually probably have more affinity to their college vs. non-Greek.

If the university were to ban the Greek system entirely, I gather many wealthy alumni may respond with reduced donations.

After that week, anyone that was not White was specifically pulled and questioned as to why they were there, who they came with, etc. White, non-frat kids didn't have that issue.

The one non-white kid that eventually decided to pledge was crying in his room several days during the pledge process because of what he considered extra hazing (may or not have been extra; maybe all pledges cry) and racist comments.

And to think all these kids had resumes filled with 100+ hours of service work and other pretend activities that portrayed them as paragons of virtue.. sad.

That's weird because my white DS is in a UM fraternity and his first president was non-white. It's one of his closest friends. There has always been a non-white person on the board. But, this isn't one that is highly ranked, so maybe your son's friend was trying to join a top frat. From what DS has told me, after rush only women are allowed at parties and other men who are friends with fraternity members and already have their name on a list. All other guys would be turned away, regardless of race.

Re hazing, there is a range at UM, which I'm sure is true at any school. At low-ranked frats, hazing is more along the lines of having to do errands (pick up a brother's lunch).

my kid is at UVA and this is exaclty right there too. The lower "ranked" chapters usually have alot more diversity. My DS is probably technically in the minority being a white male. And yes the "hazing" was running errands, driving drunk brothers home from parties, cleanign the house etc. They also had to sing a song and do a dance in front of the chapter at their formal. How awful LOL

and yes, after rush, no males are allowed in unles they have good friends in the house. That is the whole reason that you join, so you can continue to go to their events.

Kid has friends who are freshman and pledged.

Anyone can corroborate?

Hazing is being reported not just at frats but on sports teams as well. These poor kids - imagine how frightening it is to wonder and have anxiety about what may or may not happen to you once you get to college. Why do parents allow this? Just this week alone more reports of hazing - kids being physically and mentally tortured. These poor kids. Not to mention the kid that ended up in a coma at UVA and apparently another incident this week there with pledges as well?

Reported at Maryland this week:

"Students were allegedly spat on, burned with torches and cigarettes, forced to lay on nails, eat live fish, drink urine, endure beatings with paddles, and sustain physical assaults for hours while nude for public humiliation."

"One anonymous student reported, "Being forced to attend a "Line Up" at which they abuse you for hours on end (5 in my experience) where they force you to wall sit, do push-ups, plank, intentionally harm oneself, be naked/in underwear for public humiliation, and be physically assaulted. At one of these events, one individual passed out as they refused to provide us with water and forced us to drink straight vodka and they did nothing to help him, in fact, they hit him in the face with a plastic bat and poured beer on him until he woke up."

It is worse - your kid won't tell you what they actually endure. Truth is starting to come out at fraternities across the country and it is bad. UVA kid is in a coma and 3 more allegedly may have been sent to hospital last week for hazing? Wake up people. This is so so sad to me. These are young kids 18-19 years old who are excited to start their college life and some are literally being beaten up - yes beaten and this kid in a coma will never be the same most likely. Why do parents stand for this and allow this?

Terrible! 'Back home', hazing along these lines and worse used to be part of college culture (and I suspect, still is). At a neighborhood college, a couple of years before i started, the upperclassmen picked on the wrong kid (politically connected). That kid's brother and friends ended up beating the crap out of about a dozen of those upperclassmen (firewood and bicycle chains were liberally used), with several long hospital stays. College management stopped hazing in a heartbeat, at least for a few years. I'm always surprised something like that doesn't happen here in retaliation against extreme hazing, sexual abuse and pedophilia that seem to be systemic in a lot of institutions and go on for years..

Everyone complaining about this would be appalled by Frostburg.

I wish I could cash in on all the hazing I went through.....for a sorority that isn't even recognized by the university.

If you go greek, expect hazing. Period. That culture hasn't changed in decades and will never change.

I am just catching up on news and reading all of this in the news this week and am just so sad for these kids. I can't imagine how scared they must be. This is not fun or cute or just games. Being beaten up and burned with cigarettes? Other schools having these issues at well. Sports teams too. Imagine being away from home for the first time ever and making a college team and you end up getting beaten and emotionally tortured? Beyond sad and terrible.

Reading this actually makes me nauseous. I feel horrible that people go through this (& then perhaps do the same to the next pledge class.) Why is this still allowed and endorsed in the year 2024 where inclusion , not exclusion, has been shouted from the rooftops to these kids for years.

The sorority hazing is not mentioned as much as the fraternities. I was hoping it was not as bad. I don’t have a daughter but was hoping none the less.

Tell your boys they don’t have to do it. Mine refused but he is still friends with a lot of them and lives with them and even goes to their parties. I honestly cannot imagine him ever putting up with something like that or doing it to others.
Anonymous
Do professional fraternities practice hazing, does anyone know? On the college site, the professional fraternities state no hazing. But who knows anymore.

^ he has told me some of what he has seen that his friends have had to go through, I’ve had to tell him to stop because it’s just too much. He is a current sophomore.
