Sushi for a large group

So let me get this straight, you don't want to serve your guests the same quality of food as you'd your own family..? Because you're too cheap and it's "inconvenient"? Hosting a dinner party isn't supposed to be convenient, it's supposed to be an act of generosity.

I'm curious what kind of people approach hosting like this. OP is definitely not Middle Eastern or Asian.

1. Kanpai Sushi on MacArthur (Bethesda). It's my favorite because it's always fresh and traditional, and as sushi goes, the price is reasonable. No fusion or modern sushi. Order at least 24hrs in advance.

2. Sushi Toro on Nicholson (Rockville). More modern combinations (that people seem to like, not me), pretty good, flowers on the platters. You can order day-of.

I'm the above PP, Japanese and live in Bethesda.

Get out of here with the cost excoriations. Individual rolls in most restaurants are way too expensive to have for parties. OP just doesn't know where to go for decent party platters, which is why she's asking here.

We host sushi dinners for friends and family often. We plan for 2 rolls per person plus do a combo of apps and side dishes to supplement. Steamed edamame, some dumplings, a noodle dish, etc. Last time I made a miso-glazed roasted eggplant, which was a big hit. Once we also served some crispy chicken made in the air fryer with dipping sauce. It’s always well-received.

Maki Maki in Bethesda sells a big take-out sushi platter that is good. You can pick your own rolls and pieces too.

NP. These are great recs. Kanpai lists actual party platters on its menu. How much do you order per person if sushi is the main food? (plus apps, like OP plans) I’ve never ordered for a party but am now inspired.)

Oh my god, you people are reading a lot into this. I am having 20 people over and don’t want to figure out which rolls to order for which person. It’s hard enough to do that for my family if 4 and I know what they like. I want to find a place that has a sashimi platter, a nigiri platter and a roll platter and I just pick one. I know balducci’s does this, but wanted something better that wouldn’t require me to select 40 individual things on a menu. When I asked about not too expensive, I simply meant I didnt need a 5 star sushi chef to come to my house to make it. I’m not planning to feed people sushi from giant, and mentioned Whole Foods and balducci because I know they cater.

PP you replied to. We count at least a dozen maki pieces per person (fewer if sushi pieces but generally we get combo platters), and since it’s usually for birthdays, we also have cake, and I make a Japanese salad.

The sushi counter at Harris Teeter in Park Potomac does a great job with platters.
