Maryland bill to exempt student punishment for threatening teachers and staff moves forward

Obviously "put kids in jail" and "do nothing" are both bad options. I'm sure you wouldn't be happy if the police came to arrest your kids every time they talked back to you or slapped their sibling. So why is it OK in school?

We need sensible tools for classroom safety, including separating children who can't control their behavior, while still providing educational opportunity and showing respect.

I'm fine with keeping molesting other students a crime. Why aren't you?

Has one of your kids ever "pestered or harass (someone) in an aggressive or persistent manner."? Nearly every child has done that.

I think everybody should write their Lawmakers to vote against the spill. I just can’t believe that there are people who think this bill is OK. And if they mean molesting as in disturbing, then that should be clearly in the bill because as written some are going to argue down the road that it’s OK for one student to molest another with no repercussions.

What the heck does that mean? What does "disturb" mean in this case?

https://www.lawinsider.com/dictionary/molest

Molest means to annoy, disturb or persecute with hostile intent or injurious effect.

Molest means to act, with hostile intent or injurious effect, in a manner that would reasonably be expected to annoy, disturb or persecute a person

It's a word that is no longer useful because it's common meaning has drifted over time, like most words, because everyone prefers the sexual interpretation of every word possible. See also "grooming" (performing social niceties) and "dick" (person or detective)

I don’t understand why anyone would support exempting kids who threaten the lives of others, especially authority figures who are on the front lines, from punishments. What is the rationale? Are we encouraging school shooters now?

Regardless of what the the actual intent is, this is the result of electing a Legislature with no knowledge of law., who spend all their time and skill campaigning.

This bill is senseless. The original provision is clearly aimed at students. If they want to repeal it, they should repeal it. If they want to have separate laws for students and non-students, they need to write laws for each group. Mangling an existing law like this is plain lazy and stupid.

Has your child ever threatened you or another child? Ever?

I'm sure you'll say "no, my golden child never does anything like that". But think about all your friends who aren't as good parents as you and their kids, who go on fortnite and yell threats at each other, or throw controllers at TV screens

Those are the BEST schools according to the latest MCAP.

Do you have evidence to support this claim, or are you being a sarcastic troll?

Let the adults speak, honey.

It's certainly not going to be Biden and the Democrats. Looks like they are the ones who got us into this situation in the first place, with their complete disregard for law and order. We need balance.

molesting means to disturb. I'd like to make it a crime if your child disturbs me while i'm in a library when they ask you read them books.

It means to interrupt or interfere. Like you are throwing a ball on the playground and a kid grabs it and runs away with it. That would "disturb" what you were doing on the playground.

A Maryland proposal to eliminate punishments for certain crimes and disruptive behaviors committed by students on school property advanced Wednesday despite concerns about its impact on student accountability and safety.

The bill, which was first reported by FOX45 News, would change state law by eliminating current prohibitions and penalties for enrolled students who engage in “disturbing activities at [their] school or college,” including “molesting or threatening [other] students." Lawmakers say the term "molesting," in this instance, means to disturb.

If passed, the bill would also exempt students from certain penalties for threatening school employees, including teachers, with bodily harm if the threat is made while on school grounds.

In the House, a floor amendment introduced by Del. Matthew Morgan, R-St. Mary’s County, was voted down. According to Morgan, his amendment aimed to ensure student accountability.

I have no words. We have absolute morons in Annapolis. I'm hoping the Senate can kill this bill but I don't know. The fact that it made it out of the house is DISTURBING.

Thank you for posting this OP. More parents need to make the connection that what goes on in local and State goverment has a direct impact on our schools and on our kids. This is a perfect example of how this works.

the law actually is in line with all laws in the united states. there is a difference between a threat and a credible theat.

You can't just arrest someone for saying a threat unless they can carry it out.
